OK, now before you all scream "heathen," grab your pitchforks and prepare to burn me at the stake, hear me out ;)
So today Apple announced the iPhone 3G S, which is the 3rd generation iPhone. Not long after, Vodacom announced that it will be available from next month.
I currently have a Nokia N78, which I love. I'm due for an upgrade in August. I also have an iPod Nano 3rd gen (4Gb). Since I love my phone, but need more space on my iPod, I've been considering getting the iPhone as my upgrade come August. I've also been looking around the App store and noticed there's some awesome applications available for it - from News24 to Mxit (yes, I use Mxit :p Beta test it in fact :D).
I have one issue though. Today I noticed someone mentioned you can't multitask with it? Now I don't need epic multitasking (got to 28 open apps on my N78 and it didn't slow down one bit...I got tired of opening more applications though xD), but I at least need to be able to check my SMS's when Mxit is running, for example. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Im a google fanboi. I say rather get the HTC Dream from MTN. Same price, maybe a bit cheaper than the iphone, op is open source so loads of crap will be available soon plus it has a keyboard. I want one, G1, sooo bad.

sellout or not, my mate has an iPhone and it's pretty damn sexy.
My HTC Imate Jamin has seen the end of its days, with the speaker broken so it doesn't ring anymore, screen re-aligning twice a day and then some ... I'm in SERIOUS need of an upgrade.
I don't have a contract running so right now I'm trying to decide what would be the best route for the most appropriate phone. Pay-If-You-Can route or contract.
I buy a R175 voucher once every 3 months or so, hence I'm not a big talker.
Sorry to hijack your thread here dude - but any advice?

If I get an Android phone, it'll be the HTC Magic from Vodacom, which is better than the dream (they're both rather ghastly-looking though :o).
The only thing I'm weary about, though, is being an early adopter of a platform that is yet to prove itself. I hate having to go on the hunt for applications etc. to suit my needs. I can see myself using Android eventually, but I think I'm going to wait until the platform has established itself more and better looking phones come out.

Haha, it's all good.
Vodacom's contract prices are surprisingly cheap at the moment. Check out http://www.vodacom.co.za/getSpecials.do.
As you can see, the HTC Touch Diamond is an excellent deal if you're looking at getting a cheap and affordable touch-screen phone with mostly up-to-date features. HTC's are also built very well and I've never had any issues with them. I personally know two people with Diamonds and they love it.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 (right at the bottom of the list) is also a steal at that price. It's built by HTC and runs on Windows Mobile with a custom interface they've added to it.

I prefer a blackberry tbh, the storm is coming, and its awesome (the coming bit was just a war3 sound "a storm is coming")

Blackberry's are starting to look nicer aesthetically, but their features sadly still leave much to be desired. The only thing I really like about them is the R69/month unlimited data offer from Vodacom.
I wish that was available on all contracts as an add-on. Man would that be awesome combined with the iPhone.

wait for the palm pre ! its getting released soon ! apparently it won the best in show award at cebit and it is rumoured as the true iphone killer ! the os can also multitask
Not an answer to your question Lydon, but I will add my +1 for the iPhone.
You still can't beat the interface and simplicity of it, and if you want a decent iPod it makes sense to get it over the 'competition'. I was in exactly the same boat as you and I've made my mind up to go for the 3GS when it's available.
Hmmmmm, this is a good one. Palm isn't really big over here though but I smaak these feature
Linux-based operating system, webOS
AND
The Pre is one of the first smartphones to feature wireless charging
iPhones are pretty and all but the pricing in SA is just a complete rip-off

Thanks mate, will give it a looksee. Apparently 2-year contract bindings are also going to be barred soon. I'll have to wait and see.
I _REALLY_ wish we had dual-sim phones in SA. It would be cool not to carry 3 phones around with me when I go to site meetings etc. Plus, you can see to which line a call is coming in and answer/dismiss it accordingly.

I have an iPhone 3G, and I think it's an amazing phone. Sure you can't have multiple applications open at once (unless you jailbreak it, and I'm not sure why you wouldn't). The phone is great to use, the touch screen is unlike ANY other phone I have tried. It is fluid, perfectly responsive and it does just what you want it to do.
Out of all the other smartphones with 8 Mega pixel camera's and all these things, nothing can compare to the ease and pleasure of using the iPhone.
That's my part, and until the HTC Dream and Magic step up a little, I'm sticking to the iPhone and buying the 3GS as soon as it's out :D

Ah yes, I forgot about the Pre. Any idea when it's being released here?
I'll have to do some more research about the Palm app store, as one of my main reasons for wanting the iPhone is the availability of apps for almost anything.

From what I understood, it's not the actual deals that will be barred, but the contract terms. If you want to cancel the contract, you will soon be able to, but you will have to pay the outstanding fees on the contract.
At least with the HTC Touch Diamond you get to feel all cool when you dismiss a call :D (you turn it upside down if you want to reject a call).

Thanks for the other opinions guys :) appreciated.
