I have a little problem. I am currently running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I also have XP 64 bit sitting on my desk. Which one should I use?
Current specs:
Intel E8400 @ 3.0ghz
8GB RAM
Lots of disk space
Samsung T240
Creative X-Fi Platinum
ATI RAdeon H4870 1GB
Vista seems to use a lot of memory at the moment so not sure if I will get better performance with XP?

You've got 8GB of RAM. I honestly don't think that you would have a memory problem. Vista has the added bonus of using DX10 and since you've got the graphics card, well I reckon you should stay with Vista.

Xp > Vista
Just personal pref. And it has nothing to do with ram. I just find XP more user friendly and clean as opposed to Vista.

For now I'd say, without a doubt go for XP, and wait for Windows 7 by the end of the year! See PCAdvisor (http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/index.cfm?reviewid=106237), But then again, maybe you posted this tread just to brag about your specs... you've got reason to, I'm very jealous!

Personally I'd go for Vista 64 bit, I have no problems and generally its actually not as bad as people claim if your PC is good enought and all I ever hear about Windows XP 64 bit is the lack of driver support...

For 64 bit Vista would be best in terms of driver support. :)

Did not really plan on bragging :P
I have just heard from a lot of people that Vista is not quite there yet. I still prefer XP even though Vista looks a little "cooler"
I run a few VM machines too. Sometimes up to 3 at a time so that is where a lot of the memory goes :)
It has just taken me ages to install vista with all the updates and don't feel like going XP and then regret it afterwards :|

If you plan on making any major changes, make a mirror backup of the drive, then if anythig happens and for whatever lunatic crazy reason your not happy with a faster better operating system, you can go back to vista, A computer should run your OS fast, you shouldnt need a fast computer to run your os...

I have downloaded a free application and that mirrors so going to give that a try and if all else fails hopefully I can revert back :P (And yes it was Legit free ;))

You've got the hardware power to run the crappy system hog that is Vista, so why not.
As mentioned above, best plan is to hold out until Windows 7 and slap that on ASAP.

Anyone using the BETA release of Windows 7, and if you are how goes it?
And if you can, anyone willing to burn it and post it rather than me killing my cap ? :)

Agreed :) I also have some apps etc that just don't work well on Vista. I do however think the OP should run Vista due to his system specs.

I Run both operating systems on seperate machines
And I have to admit that Vista, despite my earlier reservations has really surpassed all my expectations.
For instance, on my laptop, playing CoD 4
My graphics card driver would freeze ( fixed with new updated driver ) but my CoD would simply black screen for a second, Vista would recover and re initiate the service and CoD would be back, not down long enough to get disconnected :)

Vista is a no-no. Only reason anybody would want Vista is if they can't run Windows 7 or XP! Either wait for the official 7 release, or just stay with Vista. But with all aspects Vista seems to be slacking.

There is nothing Wrong with Vista, there never was.
It was Hardware and Soft ppl, that did not listen to microsoft that they are Changing the keneral and old drivers will not work at all.(NVIDIA, ATI and HP I am looking at you here).
95 % of all problems where caused buy bad drivers since ppl dint listen.
Its also the reason I will never use Macfee and Norton as an anti Virus, since microsoft kicked them out of the kernal, but then they sue them to gain access so there crappy anti virus could work again.

If your a gamer you should have noiced that vista wasn't gaming friendly.
The Os loved sucking ram for the smallest little application...not to mention the fact that you never really own vista..You pay your ass off for it but it still belongs to microsoft.

Ive been using it for some time now and I havn't found any problems..as long as you have a internet connection plugged in while installing it'll install every single driver update for all your hardware without even bothering you about it. It also installs alot faster than vista..I installed it in around 20-30min.
The whole look and feel is well rounded and alot smoother. Probably the best thing about windows 7 is that it won't suck on your hardware like vista does. I havn't had any compatibillity issues with any hardware or software thus far. Its what vista should have been and a hell of alot more!!

yup, same here.
I even still have some of my oldschool PC game boxes. When they were still nice and big.
Although in Stefan's defense ... I also use daemon tools to launch my miniCD for BF2. I have the original ( @ R89 why wouldn't I ?!?) but I prefer not running games off the cd all the time.
I've actually had to use daemon tools to get my valid copy of MoH: Airborne to work, since it wouldn't play off the cd.
Anyway, back to topic:
I'm currently sitting with:
AMD athlon 3000+
1.5GB ram (I sacrificed 1x512mb to my parents' pc when their ram borked over the weekend)
nvidia 8600GT
Right now XP seems like the only option for my pc - predominantly used as a gaming box. Should I bother with Win7 or not?
