Is wireless gaming a practical option?

Well first off, I, like many other heavy internet users, have never been a big iBust fan.

Is this just a typo? :p

Like I said, it is not as good as ADSL, obviously, wireless most probably never will be.

However, for wireless, it is decent. 80ms latency is not THAT bad, its not great, but its better than Neotel and years ahead of 3G/HSDPA.

I play with WiFi on international servers (FPS games). I have little to no lag, my latency is stable, but I keep hearing how I LOOK like im lagging from my teammates. This must be due to the increase in PJ cuz of the wireless. Other than that its completely playable. Yet, not ideal, I have to confess. If you can use wired, do it.

I absolutly hate any form of lag...So i guess i'd rather stay wired with helkom.
Thanx for the informative artical..you saved me some money:D

+1

Yes, a good old fashioned ADSL cable is still the king, but compared to Neotel (90-120ms) and 7.2 mbs Telkom 3G (90-140 and very jumpy) iBurst is pretty decent

Ouch. Yes 3G is super sucky.

Im currently playing with telkom's 7.2mbs 3G and its a LOT better than regular 3G for gaming. Still sucks though :p

Well I use 3G for COD WAW and I get latency of around 130. Which I play quite well with strangely enough.

Unfortunately a hardline is out of the question because:

a) Telkom can't install hardlines at the complex I'm living at. Something to do with the way the place was built.
b) My flatmate is seriously anal when it comes to doing anything permanent to the flat(i.e. drilling, pasting etc)

So I need something that is wireless that works well with gaming. I was hoping NeoTel would be my saviour, unfortunately by the time I finally have coverage the second ice age would have passed already.

Tinman, did you use an external antenna for the Iburst?

Not keen on the wireless idea for fps. It's not the "we can get 80ms ping most of the time" , it's the random large spikes that hurt most. 5 seconds of 80ms and then 1 seconds of 800ms is devastating (and for some reason those spikes always seem to happen at the worse time, perhaps the extra data transfer of alot of action on the screen at once catches the wireless off guard). Consistency is the reason people use DSL for games.

Nope I used the regular modem package

:/

You would have got even better performance. I resell Iburst and play games and do tests and etc,etc

Hook up a flat panel with least amount of cable and you would have got better ping imo. When we do PuTTy tests the costing can come down atleast about 20-30 points by using a proper external antenna.
