Any fan of RPGs can probably vouch for me when I say that Square has come up with some of the best storylines for Final Fantasy. Not from 10 onwards, but 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 were brilliant.

So I'm opening up a discussion on it. For me, Final Fantasy got me hooked on gaming. The story and the way it all plays out gave me a real bond, so to speak, with the characters. My first several hour binges were spent in front of a Playstation 1 with Final Fantasy 8 and 9. Being something like 8 when I was playing them, I sucked, but recently I got EPSXE (yeah, yeah, I've got a Playstation so it's legal) and replayed them, trying to get my best time.

If you finish Final Fantasy 9 in 12 hours, I think it was, you get a super bad ass sword, but you also need to do all the side quests. I'm not Korean enough and clocked it in about 36...

And Final Fantasy 8 is probably amongst my favorites and I got all ultimate weapons for it and finished in about 40 hours. Not great but I still have it in me to go a fifth or somethingth time :P

Final Fantasy 7 was the first game I'd played except for Street Fighter, but it was also the first game I really enjoyed. I only made it through the first disk, but more recently I finished it for the first time. Really a great game.

Prior to those ones, 3 and 5 were brilliant. Stunning given their time, really.

As far as Final Fantasy X goes, it was...okay. Nowhere near its predecessors. X-2 was just embarrassing, a fucking "Dress Sphere" and skimpy outfits. Give me a break.

After Final Fantasy whored itself out by getting to MMOs I just...gave up.

You?

I think FF is the ONLY JRPG that I've managed to stomach ...... no easy feat considering how much I dislike JRPG's. I got introduced to the series on number 7 .... and 2 hours later, was utterly hooked :D The one I really enjoyed, due to just how long it was, was FF-X .... think it had me on that PS2 for months, lol. I'm really hoping XIII is decent .. especially as it's now coming to the Xbox.

Glad you started this thread, I have lots to say on the subject :p. Okay, so Final Fantasy VIII is what got me started not just on jrpg's but on rpg's in general. It was my first experience with a game as long, a game that had such a well thought out story and a game with so much rpg strategy (the juctioning system in this game was SO complex). I then a couple of years later played FFIX and loved it even more than VIII. Many years later I got a PS2 and finally played FFX, which I also loved but maybe not as much as previous games (no proper world map???). Then FFXII which was simply brilliant game wise, but a little different story wise. When I have time I'll give more in depth incites into all of them.

Im thinking getting a PS3 for FFXIII cause versus is PS3 exclusive but normal FFXIII aint

I doubt it will stay exclusive for very long mate. M$ will make sure of that.

what's the (supposed) difference apart from 'versus' anyway?

I picked up on the Final Fantasy franchise fairly late when I got my PS2 and bought myself Final Fantasy X on the basis of a couple of good reviews. After what felt like several hours of butting my head against random monster enqounters on seemingly endless roads, I gave up. That said, I might still consider trying the rereleased verison of the older Final Fantasy games on DS or PSP.

It exists in the same universe as XIII but follows a different protagonist and story.

FF XII has no random encounters. :)

Ah, so that's it? Still not justifying splashing out 5k for a different story path and hero.

I also think that it's an action game rather than a full fledged rpg, but I speak under correction here.

Nope, I heard about Dissidia, but I thought that I read something about Versus XIII being an action game. I'm probably just remembering wrong.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII is, according to its developers, a wholly independent story unfolding with different characters and a different visual design. Although it is set within the same Final Fantasy XIII universe, it is unrelated to any other entry within the compilation and is thus neither a sequel nor a prequel to any other entries in Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII.

Unlike Final Fantasy XIII, there is scarcely any information surrounding the gameplay and battle system of Final Fantasy Versus XIII because no formal footage has been shown by Square Enix of the gameplay online or within video game magazines.

Within recent Japanese gaming magazine interviews, Tetsuya Nomura has stated that Versus XIII's gameplay will be a realistic derivation of Kingdom Hearts battle system with some elements of a third-person shooter aspect similar to Square Enix's Dirge of Cerberus. Nomura has also stated that the game will depart from the light and magical aesthetic of his previous directorial games (i.e. Kingdom Hearts) and opt for a darker, bleaker world that is intended to counter previous Final Fantasy installments. In formulating a realistic world, Nomura has stated that he wants the characters to be "believable" and thus realistic. As a testament towards his desire for realism; in the PlayStation Premier trailer, in contrast to previous Final Fantasy titles, Versus XIII had a greater display of graphic violence with an instance of blood.[6]

So action rpg of sorts.

Eh, I honestly don't trust the Final Fantasy series after X-2. Maybe XIII is good, I'm willing to try it.

Either way, to prove myself, I'm going to replay Final Fantasy 8 just to prove that I can beat the final boss in better time than Isengard :P
Gotta say though, Lionheart is the coolest weapon ever. (That the right name? Been a while)

Isengard
26-02-2009, 12:37 AM
Yep its called the Lionheart ;). I think that time I beat Ultimecia in 20 mins I used lots of Auras to get the Limit Breaks up, Triples to get buffing done faster and the Ultimate weapons for at least 3 of the characters.

Shamrock
26-02-2009, 12:44 AM
What I did towards the end is just used that Card Mod ability to get 99 Heros...but it was the hero that effects your whole party. You can't use Aura with it but I pretty much took no damage :P
Loved the junctioning system as well. God damn, that was an awesome game. So was IX. I fell in love with the music and all that.

Isengard
26-02-2009, 12:48 AM
The music was one of my favorite things about 9. I fondly remember the tune that played at the start when you were running around with Vivi. Damn now I almost want to play it again. Maybe when I have time, I still have so much to do in FFXII also :(.

Shamrock
26-02-2009, 12:54 AM
Hahaha, the music is pretty impressive. Almost keeps you coming back. Loved the flute tunes in Final Fantasy 9, it was just so fitting.

Good to see some Final Fantasy Fans :D
The series was good up until X, I enjoyed XII but it never felt much like Final Fantasy.
Hated the junction system cause it was a pain having to set up a character everytime and the fact that you run out of magic eventually is annoying, prefer MP.
Best ones for me VII, IX, X, VIII. 8th is my least favourite cause Squall grates on my nerves and junction system but still its a bloody good game.

I still think that X has the best music just listen to Fleeting dreaming and The music on Mount Gagazet, pure emotional stuff.

Selphie's Special Hidden Limit Break when you "Do Over" called "The end" Instantly kills any thing (Kinda similiar to degenerator) but also works on bosses including Ultimecia

I've always wanted to play FF, but I've never come across any of their games being available until lately.

Would it still be viable/enjoyable to pick up one of the later episodes of Beatrix and her adventures or will I be missing out on too much?

_Caboose_

The only Beatrix there was for FF9 dude, PS1 exclusive (LOL) but get 7 and 8 for pc, get yourself a gamepad that looks like a PS controller and u set.

Well for me, FF 7, 8 and 9 with king. I played them all start to finish several times and loved them. I was addicted. FF X I finished as well, but it didn't quite do it for me. Not sure why but I got bored a lot easier than the others.

The whole online aspect of FF XI/XII (?) turned me away from it, well simply because I had no way of getting online that much with my then dial up connection.

If they're good, I'd still be happy to give them a go.

FYI - you can play FFXI online on a blue tooth dial up connection.

On my 4meg line...

Upload: 0.2-08.Kbps
Download 0.3-1.1Kbps

And its the same speeds for dial up and there no lag (except for crowded areas)
Look at my first post few links as well as free 14 day trial

personally i've loved every single Final Fantasy game. I live myself into the stories told by the games. I should actually go out and buy myself a PS2 again so I can play X and X-2(never finished it).

Btw. To this day I haven't played 7 :P What console has I-VI?

Final Fantasy 5 is amazing though. SEriously awesome.

I might bother with Xiii but so long VIII and IX will be plenty fun

V is all sprites, but it's fun as hell. It uses the "Job" system, so you level up as a class and can change it at any time, which is quite cool, 'cause depending on fights you can change your characters to a Black Mage, White Mage, Ninja or whatever. Of course you'd have to level up in it first, but quite cool.

Isengard
27-02-2009, 10:25 AM
Wasn't that swappable job system also available in FF X-2?

Shamrock

Yes. But in Final Fantasy X-2 you didn't change jobs, you just changed what you were wearing.
