Hey pp

I was thinking about what Garreth Cliff was saying on 5FM this morning about the whole global repression thing and how its affecting most of our jobs in this country as well.... what would you guys do if your boss said either your jobs stay on the line or you secure your jobs and take Fridays off and only work a 4 day week how would you feel about that????

Just a question use it...... dont use it...... :D

So its a four day week every week or possibly lose my job?

Am I the only not seeing any problems with this? Is there some pay difference or something that I am missing?

Quite a few companies are adopting this strategy lately.

One inparticular: They've asked their employees whether they would a) risk retrenchment of some staff or b) work 4 day weeks, and nobody gets bonuses/pay increases.

I don't think it's a case of being too good to be replaced as much as it is about it being too much of a financial delay/schlep to find another capable person and training him/her to the same level.

Well we can be grateful that we're sheltered a lot more than most developed countries are.

People with small businesses are suffering and the banks are not helping. I hope that the worst is over.

I'm experiencing a lot of stress in my industry. Not getting any pay for Feb and I sure as hell hope that March is better. If it isn't, I don't have a choice but to look elsewhere.

Otherwise I am not too bothered at the amount of time I work. I generally work 9-10 hours a day but having a friday off wouldn't be bad :) I earn commission anyway so I don't get any raises.

The example doesn't really add up. Financially the company will not be any better off, especially if there are no pay cuts. It will take years for them to achieve what they could have by just letting some people go.
Also productivity will suffer and there are already enough laziness going around as it is. No business will survive on a 4 day week. Maybe a half-day yes, but not a full Friday.
Plus, having no bonuses / increases is simply completely unacceptable.
The cost of living is always on the increase, so sooner or later you won't be able to come out with what you used to get.

A better example would be to mobilise the workforce, so that they can work from anywhere, like home, etc. Employees will remain productive this way.

It's cause when the new credit act came in every single person was up in arms. But now a couple of years later it's the reason our beloved country is not a smoldering heap.

The crisis is a whole lot more complicated than just a couple of posts in this forum and how you lose your job and their are pay cuts.

The banking world went crazy got drunk and then they played roulette with every one's money.

I'll rather work 4 days and still get paid(even if it's less) than have no job at all(and no money).

It is a lot more serious than a few posts on this forum, but really it's the responsibility of every single employer and employee to ensure they're future career. In the tough times we all have to buckle down and work a bit harder than we may have when we knew everything was just gravy.

Thats my opinion. If everyone does their share, then hopefully the banks and government can do what they need to do to ease the pressure a little.

Don't forget, you can always find another job.

No need to just sit back and take the cards you are dealt. It is all in your hands to make a change or do something new.

I think that 4 day week would work for certain companies / industries.

Take our company for example. We are in a manufacturing industry and have around 300-400 wage workers and about 60 salaried staff. If we dropped to a 4 day week, we would save a fair bit on electricty (not having to run our factory for a day would be a big cost), water, telephones etc. There would also be a huge saving on wages as those 300-400 people would not get paid for the day off. Sure it is not a pleasant idea and they would not like it, but it is certainly better then half of them getting laid off.

Realisticely there would probably have to be some sort of wage negotiation anyway so the they maybe get a few rand an hour more on the days they do work, but still less then working 5 full days.

Losing a day in a manufacturing plant is equal to a huge drop in productivity though. It can affect your agreements, sales, support and a bunch of other stuff.

The same applies to Public holidays. SA loses billions of rands for a single Public Holiday. The same would apply to this one day off a week.

Wagers are one of those classes that simply cannot wait for their pay at the end of the week, cause they live from week to week. Receiving one day less of wages will be huge for them, I can bet.
