I think people are gunna burn me for my blasphemy O.O

What I meant by that was Thread Killer should NOT give post count. On any forum I go to 1K + posts generally means the little guy knows what he's talking about. That takes me a while because I only post when I feel...inclined to for some reason. Either way, I think disabling post count in Off Topic would encourage more posts in other sections.

The prob is that sometimes there just isn't any news in the field of gaming, or there is but its not on your "Give-a-crap-about" List. So instead of going off and posting somewhere like MyBB you can head to off topic and post there. IF have post count in off-topic disabled that forum will die and alot of the MyG members which use it as a hang-out will go elsewhere. You will also get more spamming in the other Forums cluttering them. Most of the OffTopic and TK residents post in other Forums, maybe not as often as in the TK but thats coz there is always something to talk about in the TK.

Please leave are TK alone.

Maybe he meant, "why will people stop hanging out in Off Topic if it didn't count towards their post count?"

Answer is simple...so ill give it to you in the form of a question: Would partake in activites in an MMO like WoW is it didn't give you XP? Most will answer no, you want you actions to have consequences. The Same for the Off Topic section, you want every post you make to be important even if your post is "Ek is Honger" or something similarly random.

Is there any to make it that thread creators could have admin rights to lock and open their threads? It would cut down on the spam created whenever there are comps as old threads get resurrected and cluttered with junk comments.

Not that I'm aware of with VBulletin, but I'll have a look.

The problem is some users may lock threads that don't really warrant locking, so perhaps it's better to keep this under staff control.

And that why right next to the Highlighted Question i put the "Most will answer no" as there are people who will.

Secondly last time i checked Guild Wars was going the way of the Dodo... maybe now we know why. Deep down everybody want to be rewarded for what they do. As the saying goes, nothing in life is free and if it is nobody wants it.

I can't counter your first argument and you can't exactly argue it either as none of us have figures to back that up.

And with regards to Guild Wars going the way of the Dodo - huh? In March it reached the 6 million accounts created mark. It's still selling 200k copies per quarter, despite ArenaNet placing all but around 5 devs on the Guild Wars 2 project. The game is still teeming with players.

Anyway, that's extremely off topic...but my point is that I personally try to stay away from the carrot on a stick mentality of needing to be rewarded for simply existing :D I post because I enjoy it. I play games, such as Guild Wars, because I enjoy them. The number next to my name doesn't really say much other than how often I may hang out here.

My suggestion would be to include a VB game od some sort I've seen some good ones on other forums. There is one where players work together as a single nation to fight other players who are members of different nations. Each member begins their adventure by choosing a Nation which had certain advantages over other nations. They begin with a few soldiers and a bit of gold, and must build their army by fighting other players.

It was real fun.

Nothing Specific. One of our newer Member Angus is only 11 and i dont mind children, even though i think you shouldnt let your 11 year old wonder the internet alone, its just he hangs in the tk and sometime we go a bit off the rails. And we just feel that its not a safe environment for young children. Lynus is there and he's 17 i think as is Bannana Gurl who is like 17 also. Thats fine they have the sense to tell when we're being serious and when we're just jesting.

I dont want it advertised. Its just that if you go onto a thread that is afe restricted it should say so. And im not talking about alot of threads just basically the TK and some stuff in off topic. But i dont think is possible so im guessing we will be stuck with the little wippersnapper.

I think it is up to the members to control themselves anyway... in fact the regulars should be setting a good example, especially where young impressionable minds are at stake.
It could even be classified as a member's social responsibility.

_Caboose_
29-07-2009, 10:08 PM
well its actually pretty simple just have different sub sections (if thats possible)

For Sale (No creating posts in here but u create in sub sections)
. |_PC
. |_Xbox
. |_Ps3
. |_Other
. |_Zaps Specials (Where only moody can post)

And what you do is give the person Lock privliages for there post in the for sale thread. Only person who created the thread may post in that thread. All deals are dealt via PM (that way our user base will also grow) :) "People with only 20 posts or more may post in this section" otherwise TinTin's magical program deletes them hehehe

what about putting a limitation as to how much you can advertise per day i mean it shouldnt be that hard to keep posting limitations in place... something similar to the 30second post except in the sale area its like 3posts a day.... :)

I think this is a good idea, if done this section would then be needed to be strictly moderated with Banhammers being used should user repeatedly break the rules. I also think that there should be 1 thread like the Bargain thread in General Gaming, where everybody can post but the other threads should limit it to only the suppliers and they would need to contact Tinman &/or Rusty giving proof that they are legit. Also if a member wishes to sell something they contact Tinman or Rusty giving the details and is then given a 12 hour window in which to create a thread in said section. (As a side part i would say MyGaming should receive 5% of the profit made) Also once the item is sold the user should then again contact the mods and ask them to close the thread with a final post saying SOLD or something.

Lydon

Why not just introduce a reputation system to weed out the trolls and then slam down the banhammer?

Fudzy posted this in the Mybb/MyG thread. And i though why don't we do thing in any case. Not as a "penis measuring contest" if i can put it like that. I am a little fuzy on the details but i know some of the guys here will have stellar idea's.

Lydon

I like reputation systems myself :) The only problem is when people dish out positive reputation for utter nonsense to some people, but other people fall victim to unfair negative reputation.

OmegaFenix
06-08-2009, 12:45 PM
How would it work?

OmegaFenix
07-08-2009, 07:45 AM
Ive given this some thought and came up with an idea.

Each Member start with rep 5 points. The maximum you can have is 10 the minimum 0. When a member post a good article or helps a fellow user other users can nominate the member to increase the reputation of the poster. A Member can only receive 1 rep point per post. So even if 20 people nominate him/her only 1 point can be awarded. The actual awarding of points is done only by the mods. So when a nomination comes in the nominating party will have given a reason why this member should get a rep point, the mod or mods can then go check the post and decide whether or not the nominated member should or should not get a rep point. The processe should be kept anonymous so that there can be no finger pointing or anything.

The same would apply for the reduction of skill points. Should a post be considered tasteless, vulgar, rude or just plain trolling, members can then designate the posting member for the removal of a rep point. Again only 1 point per post and the mods decide whether or not there is just reason.

With all members starting with 5 you have a level playing field. Members who just post and go about there business wont be positively or negatively effected. Members who go out of their way to help other user, bring new and interesting topics to the table will gain a reputation as such. Likewise members who repeatedly flame, throll or spam will gain a reputation that represents this.

Should a member reach 2 or 1 rep points remaining i think the mods will need to decide what to do from there. If problems remain a ban could be implemented. In the same sense members who reach 8 or 9 or even 10 rep points could be thanked for their commitment and service to this community. The exact punishment and reward thing i leave the our capable mods.

Lastly (Yes i know your eyes are bleeding) Like our user groups (Star Craft, Fallout and COD WAW) there should be a wording that, at a glance, will reveal the members rep. I was thinking along these lines, in keeping with our Gaming subject matter, a DnD style Alignments.
10 Points: Chaotic Good
8 Points: Lawful Good
5 Points: True Neutral
3 Points: Lawful Evil
1 Points: Chaotic Evil

There could be for arguments sake more than 1, Jedi(KOTOR's) Jedi/Sith or Mass Effect's Paragon/Renegade.

This is what i would suggest as a reputation systems. Both to keep any trolls under control but also to be able to show members who go out of their way to help or assist others , that we[as a community] appreciate their efforts.

That is all.

Nice post Omega.

A reputation system is something we are considering in the nearby future. We will have to be extremely careful about how we implement it, as we do not want to disturb the (un)natural ecosystem that is MyGaming.

Thanx TM. I am more than willing to help with planning of it. I tried to keep the idea of balance and abuse of the system in mind when thinking up this idea. U know where and how to find me, like i said more than willing to help with the planning and things.

Another suggestion: how about an "OP" icon next to a thread creator's name when they reply in a thread they created? I find it handy on other forums when I want to address the OP specifically in a multi-page thread but I've forgotten who said person is :) Simply a little circle or square with the letters "OP" in it will do just fine.

I have a suggestion...

Ok go with me on this one... We decrease the amount of spam by closing threads that become inactive say after about 1-2 weeks and should someone start another thread but of the same topic then all that happens is the Mods get notified and the new info gets moved over to the thread which has been closed down and re-opened... i reackon it would help alot with the current spam problem. :D

That is all :)

No. For example, should Tinman post in this thread now, next to his name in his latest post an "OP" badge would display, informing people that he is the OP.

Useful for long threads that are very topic-specific or when one needs to reply to the OP.

If you're still confused I can screenie it on another forum...

Comparing Man's Need for Speed with a need for color hardly seems right. Modern Cycles and Cars are improvements over their predecessors. A color change wont make any improvements, thus don't fix what ait broke.

Yes but south africa is at the ass end of the universe. The soft ware the site is built on does it that way. To be honest ive never even noticed it. Did you for a second thing a post was made on the 8th day of the 31st month?

No, I saw something made on the 9th of January and thought it was the 1st of September.

And before you talk about South Africa being the arse end of anything, you should know that the dd-mm-yy format is used in the majority of the world... When we speak, we talk about the "twenty-second of August", not "August the twenty-second". It's only natural that our written way of expressing the date works the same way. The mm-dd-yy format comes from the U.S., which is in this case more backward than us, as they're the one of 3 countries in the world that hasn't officially switched to a metric system of measurement.

Ideally I would have set the time options myself, but I can't find it anywhere in the control panel.

Yes, I agree. South African locale is pretty much the stanard in SA. It should be able to be changed, in the software config of the forum somewhere. I am not a big buff on the forum software, but almost all software you can change the locales (at least the ones I worked with).
All my software and systems I setup uses the South African locale and regional settings, including the date / time format.

Yea guys. Unfortunately the Google adds have to be given a good spot, the more people click, the more money we get, and the more likelihood that MyGaming will still be around in a year :D

If i may whats the running costs for my gaming as i do know nothing is free in this world... Dont worry tinman you not obligated to answer my question.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a term originally referring to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. It is commonly used in practice to refer to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)

Its the same thing.

FTP site!!

What as in a local download server for patches and all that??? You also gotta take into consideration do the MyGaming admins have the bandwidth to supply us for those resources and secondly who will manage and maintain it with regards to keeping it up to date and out of reach of hackers etc... just somethings to consider

@ Matosha & Doggeh

Unfortunately, since we are not owned by Telkom, like some local gaming websites :p, we jsut cannot afford to host local downloads.

@ Lydon

Not a bad idea, but would take some redesigning and stuff. Might be tricky. I think it works just having them running in the forum thread?

I suggest we all make the effort and click on a link a day. That way Tincan gets paid, we get a cool site and then there's no need for more advertising.

Why not have a section in where people can sell second hand stuff. I'm sure there's always people looking to buy some second hand good.

A really irritating thing that needs some attention is when you click on a link to a picture in someone's gallery, you need to log in to see it. It's driving me insane.

What is up with the main page asking you to log in if you want to rate someone's comments, for example? There's nowhere to log in. I can remember there used to be.

Hey Tincan,

Is it possible to add tags to our posts? That way you see a spoiler button and not the text inside it until you click on it. That way we can hide game spoilers without people stumbling upon it.

I am not sure if this exist on the forum already or maybe I am not sure how to do it. It would be nice if we had spoiler tags. If we want to discuss something without spoiling it for everyone else. Maybe a scene in a game that everyone else has not seen, but some people have seen and this could be added in a spoiler tag.
