I like Caboose's idea... they can have one of those fancy, rotating camera angles so people can self navigate and all that... like a 3D-type of experience.
Might be a bit much though... or I guess just a very basic video-review... I much rather watch and / or listen to reviews these days, than reading them.

Well generally thats more of a privilege for the mods to have all those features etc... and can you imagine everyone just sommer closing threads left and right... the forum would pretty much be entirely shutdown and people wouldnt be able to discuss things like 2 days later when it comes to mind u know

It would just have to be well-designed so that it doesn't clutter the forum too much, and so that it blends in well. They of course shouldn't be easy to get either. Otherwise they'll lose their appeal value.
However, I'd love to see a reputation system being implemented first.

Bump! It might have gotten lost in the big bad thread.:D
Ive given the this some though and come up with an idea.
Each Member start with rep 5 points. The maximum you can have is 10 the minimum 0. When a member post a good article or helps a fellow user other users can nominate the member to increase the reputation of the poster. A Member can only receive 1 rep point per post. So even if 20 people nominate him/her only 1 point can be awarded. The actual awarding of points is done only by the mods. So when a nomination comes in the nominating party will have given a reason why this member should get a rep point, the mod or mods can then go check the post and decide whether or not the nominated member should or should not get a rep point. The processe should be kept anonymous so that there can be no finger pointing or anything.
The same would apply for the reduction of skill points. Should a post be considered tasteless, vulgar, rude or just plain trolling, members can then designate the posting member for the removal of a rep point. Again only 1 point per post and the mods decide whether or not there is just reason.
With all members starting with 5 you have a level playing field. Members who just post and go about there business wont be positively or negatively effected. Members who go out of their way to help other user, bring new and interesting topics to the table will gain a reputation as such. Likewise members who repeatedly flame, throll or spam will gain a reputation that represents this.
Should a member reach 2 or 1 rep points remaining i think the mods will need to decide what to do from there. If problems remain a ban could be implemented. In the same sense members who reach 8 or 9 or even 10 rep points could be thanked for their commitment and service to this community. The exact punishment and reward thing i leave the our capable mods.
Lastly (Yes i know your eyes are bleeding) Like our user groups (Star Craft, Fallout and COD WAW) there should be a wording that, at a glance, will reveal the members rep. I was thinking along these lines, in keeping with our Gaming subject matter, a DnD style Alignments.
10 Points: Chaotic Good
8 Points: Lawful Good
5 Points: True Neutral
3 Points: Lawful Evil
1 Points: Chaotic Evil
There could be for arguments sake more than 1, Jedi(KOTOR's) Jedi/Sith or Mass Effect's Paragon/Renegade.
This is what i would suggest as a reputation systems. Both to keep any trolls under control but also to be able to show members who go out of their way to help or assist others , that we[as a community] appreciate their efforts.
That is all.
Murph

OmegaFenix22, your idea i have seen before on the PC Format and others, i like it. But i feel there is no need for the mods to be involved. If a post is opened in a technical support section for eg. The author will be allowed to give 1 correct points(eg 2-3 rep points) or semi correct(1 points)
If the author gives the correct point, a message could be sent to a mod saying the topic was closed and he can decide to close it or leave it open for further discussion?
Other wise i like the idea. Some time to program it but will get there :)

All reputation points will be added or removed, but the mods will look over them to see if all is right, and people not just giving others rep points because they like or do not like.
Just the point will go through with out the confirmation of a mod, but the mod will look over the points earned and see if its right.
Negative: I do not feel negative rep points must be added, a person posted ok some times not for the right reasons but i do not think a person must get negative points just because there post not that helpful. They tried and i feel there must be no negative reward for trying.

It's cross-forum really. Here and MyBB. It must be harsh for the female members with guys hounding them constantly. But even in my case, let me assure you that it's absolutely no fun having a female internet stalker for the last 5 years. If I could give her away, I would.

Exactly, being responsible with posts online, we never give out detailed info about ourselves, but if you take snippets from all the posts then you can build quite a detailed profile of someone (Imagine how detailed it'd be after 12K posts).
As for someone being patient, some girl found my cell # via a friend online (girls asking for guys' numbers are harmless after all right?) and she's been sms'ing me and phoning me from private numbers since 2004-5. I don't even want to answer private numbers anymore.
So hopefully this is a warning of caution to you lads and lassies out there.

Problem with that is what about PC gamers? Since MyGaming is Completely Multiplatform it would be unfair towards the PC gamers as there is no way to rank their scores since they dont have any. Also many people dont game for Gamescore or Throphies. I myself consider the PS3's Trophy system pathetic compared to the Brilliance of the Gamescore mechanic Xbox employs.
I still think the best way to rank people is with a rep system. Wink Wink Nudge Nudge @ Tinman.

Unfortunately it's impossible to always include everyone. The Xbox/PS3 rankings don't have to be plastered all over the forum...it could be a simple listing somewhere and a badge on one's profile. Unfortunately it's impossible to always include everyone. The Xbox/PS3 rankings don't have to be plastered all over the forum...it could be a simple listing somewhere and a badge on one's profile. If you don't want to be included in the ranking, don't enter your username :) And if you want to be but can't, get an Xbox :D
I suppose one could look at it like that. Q: Does this VB update include Badge functionality? Coz THAT would be teh ORSOME.

@ Dohc-WP - It's something we are thinking about, but for now are still trying to master the basics of PC, PS3, 360 and Wii. As MyGaming grows these sorts of things will become possible. As it stands now, we have to be careful where we allocat time/resources.

Tincan, I have 2 issues with the new forum layout's pageviewing:
1) I can't click on the "view last page" number like I did before, since attachments etc. are in the way. So now I'm forced to click on the first page then click "view last page" each time. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
2) It no longer highlights which page I'm on anymore since your most recent update. Any help?
1. My screen does not look like this, I am still able to view last page as before :( must be a template issue. Will fix.
2. I noticed this earlier, it is being addressed.
Hopefully rolling back to the previous template will address these issues. We will do sometime today, and report back.
Thanks again for highlighting those problems.

What about if a Poll is posted on the Frontpage we create a thread with the same poll questions, that way users can comment on the poll and the choices they made.
See this (http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php?6395-Whats-your-Online-Shooter-of-Choice.) Thread as example.

The problem is you can really can't chat like that here since most of the guys are at work. and responding like 2 hours later and the guy has no idea what you talking about. With the TK you can just quote a person that you responding to and he/she will see it. I know a lot of sites do this but I personally don't like it.

Shoutbox - adds code to the site that would slow it down. Also, as Voicy pointed out its a bandwidth hog - we are hosted locally which is pricey enough as it is.
Animated avatars - I'm also of the opinion that they can make a site look crap, and it seems there is a lot of disagreement on this one so it stays as it is. GreenOrb twisted my arm for one, as payment for writing for us. I said if people started asking questions he would lose it...

With MyGaming continuing to grow I still think a reputation system will be benificial. I noticed that the EAE forum as a pretty nifty one.
Ive given this some thought and came up with an idea.

Oh and medals or badges. :D

I like the rep point idea. One suggestion though and mayeb it is there and I just missed it, but instead of only one vote counting, maybe make it that a minimum of say 5 votes is needed to gain or lose a point?
EG, say 3 people vote yay, and one votes nay, then you only have 2 votes, but no points. once 5 people vote either way, a point is allocated. To lose that point, you would need to then have 5 negative votes.
Also, a time limit must also maybe be implemented so that someone can't go and vote negatively on a post 3 months from now.
And mappie must be handicapped starting at -7, because he is ossum and will make up those points in 3 hours anyways.

I was thinking mayhaps thread creation could be limited to those who have above 'x' number of posts, in order to reduce the spam threads that we see every now and again. Not sure how it is done, but sure Tinny knows;)

I actually have a suggestion but I don't know if it's been made before so if it has, just ignore this post.
You are aware, no doubt, of how MyBB does some of its articles, like in its Breaking News section. This article, for example (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/content.php/1845-Three-joggers-shot-in-Polokwane), where the article and comments on the forum are linked/synchronised and poster's individual avatars show.
Is it not possible to do something similar on MyG where the comments and the forum work 'together?' That way comments and forum posts will have the same consistency behind them. Also, get rid of that rep thumb thing. Bloody annoying. Totally screws with my OCD.
It feels redundant to want to post the same thing twice.
I actually think it's a good idea :o And it looks incredibly neat as well!

The problem with that would be implementation. There would have to be a rep system in the forum and urgh... That never goes well, the system becomes a huge popularity contest and good points end up being trolled.

Hi everyone; I like your idea Lycanthrope. The thing is, over on MyBB, the breaking news section is part of the vBulletin forum system. The content management system is separate, and that's where the main articles are managed. Same thing for MyGaming - content management and forum are separate systems.
Trying to integrate the two is a total nightmare and we'll likely wind up deleting the Internet.
Tinman and I are scratching our heads over this comment system as it stands - hopefully we'll come up with a cool solution before too long :)

The idea for the new comments section is currently as follows:
Anyone will still be able to comment under an article as a guest. However, these comments will be posted under the username 'Guest'. Also, they will all have to be approved by an admin before they are published.
There will be an option to create a new profile for the front page section. This means that you will be able to secure your desired username. Once you have created your profile, you will be able to post your comments without the approval requirement. If a select user posts posts something distasteful (trolling, racism, personal attacks) they will be warned and banned for one week. If they do this three times, their account will simply be banned.
This is a work in progress, but I'd like to have it up and running next week.
Sadly, there is no way to link forum profiles to the front page section. This would be awesome, but because the front page uses a different system to the forum, it's very messy, and every future update would undoubtedly wreak havoc with the integration.

Yeah, I thought it might've ended up being a nightmare to implement.
Another example that comes to mind is GameSpot--forums, comments, unions, blogs, etc are all linked together (including a post thumbs up/down system) under one account, but that's a bit more complicated to pull off :o
Trying to integrate the two is a total nightmare and we'll likely wind up deleting the Internet.
I'm willing to take that risk :D (Brave, aren't I?)

Thing is... if the solution requires someone to register twice for the same site then it acts more as a deterrent than a companionable incentive with a bit of wine, some flowers and chocolates for good measure.
I'm really won over by the Breaking News section on MyBB. I love seeing forum posts beneath the article and with my specific avatar <3

Okay - here's a new suggestion - regarding comps especially. It smacks a bit of exclusion, but I'm thinking it might help a bit with all the one post wonders who come crawling out the woodwork whenever a comp gets announced.
I know one of the goals of these competitions are to get new people to the site - I'd say it works, but it doesn't really retain them and help build the community, especially since they disappear until the next comp.
Divide the comps into two categories - one on the lower end, and one on the upper end (however you want to term it). The lower end comps could be used to get the new guys in - prizes could maybe consist of game merchandise or something similar. Nothing too extravagant.
The higher end comps would be aimed at the guys who have been on the forum for a while and have made a constant contribution. Y'know, give them some reward for having been around for a while, posting regularly, just overall being good blokes (and girls - I'm not forgetting you). So hopefully this would get the new guys in, and get them hanging around in hopes of getting their grubby little paws on something a little more valuable. As for what the prizes would be ... not sure - GOTY editions, games with hampers? I have no idea what myG's scope is in this area.
Whether this would actually work in practice, I have no idea. Just tossing the idea out there so bigger minds than mine can deal with it :p
We know some sort of quality control has been tried (with regards to the number of posts people are allowed to have before entering) - problem being that it results in a lot of those pointless posts that have made me (and others I'm sure) want to tear their hair out by the roots.

Some of us frequently visit the site but don't have time to post on the forums due to our busy lifestyles or we simply don't have the time to engage in a public debate. Comps should be made forum only if post counts are what determines your entry.
shadowfox

While I accept that to some degree ... I'm not going to accept the "I'm too busy" excuse. Using that logic, it doesn't make sense that people who are "too busy" to post in the normal course of things suddenly have enough time to rack up 40 posts in a relatively short period of time.
I work full-time, I study part-time, I have 3 sites of my own to administer. I still find time. Not that hard. The point has been made before.
This suggestion has multiple targets in any case. We have the Thread Killer thread where people are free to post whatever they wish (dunno, I've never been there) - but people insist on resurrecting dead and dessicated threads, or going, for example, into the Jokes thread to post "Lol, that's funny". And that's not even an extreme example. A little scratching around, and I could probably find many more, and much better, examples than that one.
My final point is this ... this is only an idea (or a suggestion as the thread topic suggests) ... I'm not going to war with anyone. The final decision rests with the admins - maybe my suggestion helps them come up with a new different idea which will be more palatable to everyone. You don't agree with it? That's fine. It's always open for debate.
Assuming you can find the time, of course :p

You make a valid point, of course, but at the same time one needs to ask: How do you prove you're a regular reader?
myGaming's news section and the myGaming forum are one and the same - the forum is all about participating and building community. Part of the purpose of these competitions is to bring newcomers to the forum and help build the community. That's why to enter, you need to visit the forum, otherwise they may as well just have put up a random entry form somewhere on the site. At the moment, what we have is people who read the article, pop onto the forums, enter competitions, win prizes (or not) and disappear until the next comp comes along. At that point, they suddenly crawl out the woodwork, post randomly until winners are announced ... and vanish like mist in the sunshine afterwards.
You seem to interpret my suggestion as some form of misdirected hostility towards new people, or people who are "too busy" to post regularly. It's not. It's hostility towards people who want something for nothing. And I'm sure some unhappiness occurs when someone who spammed their way up to 20 or 50 or whatever number walks away with a prize and is never heard from again. Not to mention that I hate having to read spammy posts - and I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

Very well put Shadow!

So there's no reward for loyal readers but just reward for loyal forum members? Why must a forum preside over a site that delivers gaming news?
FYI the forums where here before the news pages

I have a question... why can't I upload a animated gif to my picture albums anymore. the ones I uploaded some time ago still work but adding new ones does nothing. :(

2 honest suggestions:
1) Take away the custom user profile pages, it looks terrible. (instant migraine)
2) Limit the size of the signatures. Some are just OTT.
