Maybe then, they should just have guidelines with regards to the size of graphical sigs - say size x by y, no bigger than x amount of kilobytes (I've come across a case where one bloke had a 1.2MB sig). It doesn't have to be strictly enforced, but then obviously if someone goes blatantly oversize the mods can just send him/her/it a message and say "Hey, tone it down a bit"

I strongly suggest that you integrate the forum authentication onto your main site for posting comments on News articles. It is far to easy for people to post under false names with zero accountability, and I have seen it all to often. It would go a long way to cleaning up the comments section because some of the comments I read go so far off track to the point that people are insulting each other, and honestly, who wants to read that? I am all for freedom of expression but really, comments are there purely to comment and discuss the article. I am almost at a point where I don't enjoy reading the comments, and I think that has to change.
You will have more comments on articles by doing this, and you can also remove the forum link in your articles to promote it. It makes sense, if I read an article I then read the comments, and I can post my reply. Then I have a forum link where a totally different discussion may be taking place. Shouldn't there be more continuity? I think so.
shadowfox
29-03-2011, 09:50 AM
I think it's actually been discussed in the past (I vaguely remember something like that) - but integrating the forum and news section is either impossible/too difficult/not worth it - I can't remember the exact reason.
But I do think they could look into implementing a similar system to what News24 has in place. Although I notice it hasn't really cleared up the comments a lot either.

Go have a look at News24. South African site. Now it may not be gaming related, but it probably gives a sad, yet realistic view on local posters. Yes, that is a generalisation, but I'm not sure using international sites as a reference is accurate. If I'm proven wrong, so much the better, if not, well tis the pity.

Depends on "all those things." I don't even know how many posts of his I'm unaware of.
It's easy to tell the difference (at least from my perspective). He Americanises words (civilization instead of civilisation) or misuses apostrophes. He also (I suppose deliberately) misrepresents my stance on certain topics.
He's just a troll and while I find the attention flattering--imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and all that--the fact that I've had odd folk getting the wrong impression of me bugs me. I'd expect people to know better but it seems that they don't.
I've decided I'll no longer utilise the comments section of articles so if you see any posts there by "Lycanthrope" you can be absolutely certain it's not me.

Maybe implementing iSpy for the forums? That way we can see the posts being updated without having to use the search function everytime?
Also another cool idea would be to have a chatbox of sorts, that way members can talk to each other realtime.
Oh and one more thing, some different theme's for the forums, the standard theme is too bright.

And who would buy it? a majority of mygaming members have stopped buying mags because on the internet news is daily and up to date, unlike magazines, and IMO e-magazines are even worse, why would I want to be confined to a book format when I can just click a link and read what I want to read, instead of paging through stuff that doesn't interest me?

maybe it would and maybe it wouldn't, but remember a lot of people don't have internet and when they see magazines they are like ooh lets buy that. I still buy NAG and PC Format and do internet browsing on games etc.
Also an inclusive dvd filled with stuff that is actually needed would be nice - some people don't have unlimited internet.
Many reasons, not all are met for each individual.

With regards to our little trolling problem - why not implement Disqus (or something similar) on the comments section. It does support the usual guest posting function, but that can be turned off to force the commenter to log in with his Twitter, Facebook, Google or other profiles.
People are a lot less likely to be complete pricks if their online identity is at stake.

I'd go for backgrounds if it can be like the wiki system where there is a default crisp look ( like the current setup) but once you log in you can choose from a few predefined backgrounds that could be added on like a weekly basis ( based on that weeks hottest release or something random like that)

Something like this would be great, or at least a profile choice as to which 'pool' of backgrounds we get, much like the user titles, since a GOW3 background is useless (as an advertisement) to a PC gamer.. Or maybe even just fix it so the background doesn't stop after the 3rd post on the page. :D

The background is left-aligned on the page, but the content is center aligned. The bg needs to be centred, then it'll fit properly.
The problem is that when you run out of image, it cuts to white, and that looks bad. If you want to have the background look right, it'll need to fade out to the background colour of the page (at the moment #F7F7F7, which is whitish), but to blend with a pic like that, the page bg would probably look better dark, maybe even black.
If any admin wants to test, change the css stlye for html to the following
html {
background: url("images/misc/bg.jpg") no-repeat scroll center top #000000;
}
EDIT: I see that's the method that's been used on the main site, black bg and center align the pic
PS, you can test how it looks without making changes to the system by editing the rendered HTML/CSS in your browser by pressing F12 (Firebug plugin needed for Firefox, integrated debuggers in newer IE and Chrome)

The scrolling headlines on the front page doesn't follow the norm, when you middle mouse button click to open the headline in a new tab it opens it in the current tab, meaning a cant click on a bunch of the headlines, and right clicking on the headline and selecting open in new tab opens the front page in a new tab so that I have two front page tabs instead of a front page tab and a news article tab.
Please help! I'm loosing my mind :(
Yeah, my middlemouse click simply opens another frontpage. It's annoying, because often I want to read the articles, and they're not listed anywhere else on the front-page, meaning I have to go into the News section first.
Spam much?
Just ignore him. He's been spamming the forum all week. Just another competition whore.

Just an update on that: looks like our developers are on an extended peyote binge in Mexico. They should be back to work shortly. The fabled 'login to comment' system will be a reality!

The little I know from coding it should be 2 maybe 3 lines of code at most to fix. Well fixing is the wrong work, implement rather :P

What I was thinking is why is there not a specific for sale section in the different consol sections, e.g In PC games a PC games sales thread, In PS3, Xbox Wii for sale section, PC Hardware a for sales section I am sure you get the idea, I think it would make it a lot easier to look for stuff you want to buy in its speficic consol section

Thanks for the suggestion but it would actually make things more complicated and probably messier. Spreading out the point of interaction isn't a good idea either.
The way is stands, people have titles across multiple platforms, and they can list everything in one post.
Having everything in one thread makes it much easier to conduct a simple search for the title you are looking for.

Makes sense to not spread it over separate sub-forums, but why not a sub-forum specifically for classifieds? If each item for sale has its own thread users can see at a glance what items are for sale without missioning through one long post.
Hmmm, though I don't know how much activity it'd see with other classified forums around (MyBB, PS3ZA, etc.).
James

I'll think about that but we don't like to open sub-forums unless absolutely necessary.

I still think you guys should have a classifieds section, with a proper Itrader/rep system.
It will bring a lot of new members, not to mention increased traffic to the site, which in the end is what you guys are aiming for.
A proper classifieds thread that is well moderated will be a great add on, I've spoken to tinman about it but alas..No result.

Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions.
Do you want something like we have over on MyBroadband?
I think we should put similar rules in place. 50 post minimum and 3 month-old account before anyone can post. This establishes them as a trustworthy community member and prevents spammers.
Thoughts?
Alternatives?

Might not be a terrible idea. As for 'trustworthiness', carbonite.co.za has a wonderful "iTrader" system, where users get ranked according to their sales. Therefore you can browse a person's track record where he was rated by the buyer/seller. E.g. I bought a racing cycle off there recently. Seller has a 100% track record for 8/8 sales, which means he's pretty trustworthy & I could read the reviews of buyers who used him. In turn, he gave me a 100% review as being a nice buyer who pays on time etc.
It's a basic system that may require some time to set up, but very useful....otherwise the 3 month / minimum postcount / whatnot feature is fine.

Oh ... and is it possible to remove the GoW3 backgrounds from the forum section at least? Seeing as they only span the first bit of the page (and go away the further you scroll down).
I've been experiencing terrible lagspikes ever since it was introduced and even forum post features get all funky from loading.
(Also that black stain in the middle of the background makes me worry that my screen is dirty each time. :( )

Not a fan of the Mybb classifieds, because they just don't work properly.
I do like the 50 post minimum and 3 month old account before posting rule.
Also you guys will have to add a rep system, something like Itrader.
There should be a classifieds section, just like there are pc gaming, console gaming ect.
There should also be a prefix when selling, like for instance I would like to sell a game then you would need to select game from a list or from drop down tab if possible, same for hardware ect.
James

No idea why it would cause you to lag. It's a very small file and it should get cached on your side.
Unfortunately it can't just be removed on a whim; it's advertising and it helps keep the MyGaming website afloat :)

It does make a difference, take the ph forums before carbonite was established - it was chaos to sort thru all the classified posts to get to the relevant posts. Where now on carbonite its so much easier to post something for sale and sell it with little hassle? It does affect the people who doesnt want to see 100000000 posts selling stuff and it makes life for the moderators hell to keep control. Just imagine the spam we would see in those classifieds for people who are trying to get their post counts up to enter the comps? The poor guys who will be moderating the classified will be dealing with a lot of 1 liners, non relevant posts such as "oh this game is ossim".
At the moment you have the one thread where things are sold/swopped/ traded and no drama. Trust me as a long time user of PH (I came to mygamimg when the classifieds took over ph and the articles and such got lost in all the madness) I found mygaming a great place for information which is up to date and in general a great atmosphere.

Well, the existence of the classifieds forum won't make any difference to the other forums, and a good way to keep spam to a minimum in there would be to implement a feature where posts in the classifieds forum doesn't increase post count. I really still don't see the big issue.

Or do like Mybb but make mybb.bot or it would be called mygaming.bot the only account which can post in the forum.
Then make a classified form where people can fill it in and then the mygaming.bot will post it in the classifieds section.
This at least removes all spam and classified entries can be checked before the bot posts it.

Tinman did make a post under rules and regs originally about the maximum size & number of sigs that we are allowed to peruse on our posts.
I'll try dig it up, but it's the reason I went for my current sig instead of separate xbox and ps3 ones.
1. Avatars may not consist of any pornographic or inappropriate material.
2. Signatures may not be multileveled.
3. Signatures may consist of a maximum of one image no larger than 500 width and 90 height.
Advertising
1. MyGaming is not a free advertising portal. Advertising any website, blog or alternative forum in any manner will result in an infraction and possible ban. If you have something to promote, speak to an admin and we will discuss possible avenues.
James, what are the rules regarding advertising? Seeing as we have representatives of other shops etc. on the site (I'm referring to the wonderful assistance from MooDy of Zaps etc. who are a wonderful asset to the myG community)
Also, does stating my twitter account at the bottom of my sig count as advertising my 'blog'?

1. Avatars may not consist of any pornographic or inappropriate material.
2. Signatures may not be multi-leveled.
3. Signatures may consist of a maximum of one image no larger than 500 width and 90 height.
There is no way for us to enforce this through forum software. It would be helpful if the community members can politely point out to those who are in violation of the rule and that they need to change it.
I agree that these oversized signatures are starting to look bad.

The MyGaming forum should redirect to the mobile version automatically. If your phone can't pick it up... Not much we can do.
There is no direct link to the mobile forum, because we haven't implemented styles.
The MyBB forum has styles from some legacy junk, and that's why you can use a direct link.
We won't implement styles on MyGaming because it's a giant pain in the ass every time you upgrade and everything breaks.

Ok so seeing as the forum has been over taken by one liners again. Can you please implement a new rule when joining to enter a comp.
New members need to introduce themselves to the forum.
http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php/103-Introduce-yourself-here
They need to state what gaming platform they prefer
The last 5 games they purchased
If they don't introduce themselves in the thread and adhere to the 2 other rules when introducing they will be disqualified from whichever comp they entered for.

Maybe I should just stop putting a minimum post count requirement in the competition rule thread. In the general forum rules it also says that a minimum of 20 posts is required to enter a competition unless otherwise stated, and you have to read the rules when you sign up. That way we'll easily see who isn't reading the full forum rules properly and people won't think they have to spam their way to 20 posts (a fruitless exercise I might add).
I'm going to take a look at the sign up rules and procedures over December when things are a little quieter.

It's a bit of pain we have to deal with occasionally :) Need to keep the forum growing, and the competition are a lot of fun for everyone (I hope). There will always be those who add nothing to the community, but as many have pointed out, they were drawn by a competition and realised how cool a place a forum can be when you find one that serves your interests and has a friendly community to interact with.
So, the one-registration wonders will die out after the competition, and hopefully some cool new people will remain. This is also why we keep the barrier to entry low; a bit more admin from our side, but participating must never be prohibitive.

Hey, I was also a compo memebr, but you know what, I read the posts and liked them and got involved. I don't only spam 20 posts each time a compo came around.
What is annoying is these okes that revive threads that are old and forgotten and for those using smartphones which have the most recent posts listed first, well you can picture it.
I like the suggestion about leaving out the post limit condition in each comp thread. Rather replace it with a have you read the terms and conditions listed under *insert link* here line in which the rules are stated. I know this has also been said about 2 million times, but I would consider increasing the post limit to 50. Really not that high that it can not be reached reasonably in a weeks time, but maybe just enough to deter One post, one line wonders. I fully understand the forums need constant growth in it's numbers to prove to advertisers that it is worthwhile advertising on Mygaming and comps are a great way to attract new members, but wouldn't we rather have quality over quantity?

I'm all for simply removing the post limit from competitions. It makes no difference either way, as there's not really any difference between having no posts at all and making 20 spammy posts to reach the limit. Neither contributes anything of worth to the forum, and the people who come here for competitions and stay as regular members are highly likely to stay regardless of post limits set forth by competitions, so it's arbitrary in the end.

I've read the rules on most forums simply out of interest's sake, and I've found that in general they're really just an extension of common sense. So if you don't make a habit of pissing on people's batteries, you don't really need to read the rules.

Well yes ... it's being run by the same people, as far as I know - and there is some correlation, but myGaming focuses specifically on the gaming market, while myBroadband focuses on telecoms and technology. So there's some overlap, but they don't really integrate all that much.

MyBB had the gaming section for a while true, but I think demand for a proper gaming section led to the creation of myGaming, since normal gaming articles would just get lost in the noise over on myBB. MyGaming allows itself to be more diverse while keeping to the gaming industry. I believe it also made it easier to hire/pull in writers and staff that could specifically write about gaming for the site without causing logistical issues.
Also ... what Omega mentioned ...
As much as people complain about newbies here, the amount of hostility towards newcomers on myBB is much, much worse.

Can I ask that a rule be instated that all posts on the forum need to be in english? I can respect people's need to converse in their own language, but then they can start a separate thread for it.
While I believe there isn't a single afrikaans person on this forum who doesn't understand english (else how the hell would he have signed up?), there are quite a few english people who do not understand afrikaans. The Afrikaans guys should respect that this is an english forum.
Nothing quite pisses me off like when I'm reading a thread here, and halfway through a group of people start talking in afrikaans. Especially considering that it always seems to be the same group, and they seem to be friends, and their discussion is usually only horseplay between them and has nothing to do with the topic. It breaks the flow of the discussion. If you want to horse around in afrikaans, make an afrikaans thread in Off Topic like the one on MyBB.
I'm betting people wouldn't be too happy if me and a few friends constantly went into threads and started talking in Swahili or French, so respect that and keep your afrikaans to less serious discussion threads or a thread dedicated to it.

We won't restrict people to using only English.
If a thread is being derailed, in any language, please report it to the mods. As far as our linguistic skills allow, we'll prevent people from derailing the topic of a thread by asking nicely, and taking further steps if necessary.

Just kidding, but seriously. English is the best and broadest form of communication for pretty much everyone on here. I always start threads etc. in English but I see no harm in secluded posts being in Afrikaans ... oder auf Deutsch wenn ich mächte.
Carrying off on a tangent in Afrikaans does create the sense of an 'insiders' club.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. It's not that I particularly prefer english over afrikaans, I just think it's bad form if a group of people are constantly speaking a language that a portion of the forum doesn't understand, when those people could just as easily be talking english. English is, unfortunately, a universal language language. I don't consider it draconian or selfish to expect people to speak a language that everybody understands when they come to a culturally diverse forum. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's selfish to speak a language that some people don't understand, when you could just as easily speak the language that all of them understand.
One should not have to use an external translating application to take part in a discussion either.
