87% is a very respectable score for DoW. I wasn't terribly impressed with the first one so I wasn't really looking forward to this one.

Perhaps it'll be worth it after all.

With my installation issues and patch issues, etc I would hardly recommend it.

Aaah now that's just not a great recommendation.

What issues did you have Waldo?

I posted my review on Take2, but they seem to have removed it. Hehe. :D
Anyway, I started the installation and noticed firstly that Steam had to be installed, so I installed it even though I hate it.

The installation alone took over an hour. Then once installed, it had to download an 80MB patch which took 3 hours to download. Steam's speed was locked at 9.5kb/s.

Once that was done, it notified me that I can now download DOW2 (7GB). Not impressed! I took it back to CNA and swapped it for TR: Underworld.

I had played it at a friend's house prior to purchase. Now he has a pirated copy. I ain't a fan of pirated stuff, but his worked perfectly without hassles.

So after all my troubles, I copied his version and it's working great. Quite a cool game. Seems the real customers get shafted nonstop.

 That's pretty terrible. I'd be pretty pissed myself.

I guess that's another reason why pirated stuff gets so popular - it's just so much easier in the long run. Same with music I guess.

I had none of these issues, so I don't know what you guys did. I would rather blame our Telecom industry for their shaping policies and degradation of quality. Steam function without issue on unshaped accounts. Please before blaming a platform investigate the cause of the issues. Must Relic foresee that stupid South Africa is way behind the developing world when it comes to internet connectivity?

I am enjoying the game with a friend in Co-Op mode. So far I would give it 90% and I have not even started the Multiplayer portion yet!

And installation issues do not justify piracy at all!

I was not justifying piracy, but it's the only way I can play the game, and it's not like I didn't try. And considering that SA plays a pretty big part in the gaming industry's sales, they should actually consider us, like Sony does.

Also, I am not the only one with these issues. Some people who bought from Take2 are suffering these issues. Others aren't. 300MB of the entire DVD was occupied on the version I bought from CNA.

Yarp, not justifying piracy, just saying this kinda thing contributes to it.

@ WaldoRibiero

Where did you get you original copy of DoW 2?

The USA release of the game requires you to download the game through STEAM, but if you buy it through a local channel then you will not have this problem.

This was mentioned in the review

Right back atcha -- I use only shaped accounts and my Steam also works just fine. The problem is the 7GB download. With 10Mbps broadband (which isn't a small amount of bandwidth, even overseas) it would take you more than 1.5 hours to download a 7GB game.

Steam is *junk*. Digital distribution is all good and well if the so-called savings developers and publishers achieve would be passed onto the end user. The Steamworks-based DRM is probably the most restrictive form of copy protection ever conceived next to SecuROM's limited activation abortion.

Talking about Relic... Steam and Games for Windows Live? Why?! Now you need to run two pieces of software on your PC the average person will never use in order to play the game.

I'll tell you why Steam: It's because somehow it's become a socially acceptable DRM even though you hand all control of your purchase over to Valve the minute you agree to their ridiculous terms . Raaargh!

Hrm... The review didn't mention a co-op mode. That's quite a nice new feature in an RTS-like game.

And installation issues do not justify piracy at all!

Agreed. As a point of interest, the pirated version I saw at a friend of mine's place took quite a bit of kung fu to get working.

And considering that SA plays a pretty big part in the gaming industry's sales, they should actually consider us, like Sony does.

Hate to rain on this parade but ZA is *far* from being a globally significant consumer of entertainment. The minor fraction of our population that can even afford gaming as a hobby is barely a blip on the radar of the enterainment-mammoth gaming has become.

They tried that with me once, I put the review back and added that Take2 deletes negative reviews which is deceptive against it's customers, they deleted it again and I put it back again, adding that they had deleted it twice, then three times, until they got the picture.

I bought it from Steam a few months back, shortly after release. Clicked Buy, then Install, then Play, no hassles. Can't say that I've ever had any hassles with Steam bought games actually.
