Book - Southern Vampires (1): Dead Until Dark
Author - Charlaine Harris
Rating - 8/10
It's the basis for the TV series called "True Blood." The beginning was tedious, followed by random dramatical bits and a very dramatic finish. All in all it was a good read, albeit a tad cliche'd with regards to vampires and their way of life. The setting and main character are not things I can identify with at all, but it was different and helped to make things slightly more interesting.

This a side story to Perdido Street Station.
It lacked the authenticity and the grittiness of the characters that Perdido Street Station had.
All and all a good read if you are looking for something that is NOT your classic fantasy template.

One of his non-sci fi books. Was an enjoyable read, he got the characters down well.

Rating - 10/10
It revolves around the history of the Lord of the rings fantasy. Explaining where the elves, men, dwarves, orcs, etc. come from as well as the hierarchy including the Balrog (10 of them were the bodyguard's of Sauron's master, Melkor) to name but a few. Extremely interesting, but complex reading.

Yeah, I found their omissions to be rather strange because they are such an integral part of the tail. But it doesn't matter I suppose, Peter Jacksons Lord of the Ring and J.R.R. Tolkiens are two different beasts, meant to be enjoyed in different ways :D.

I'm slowly ploughing through 'Shantaram' by Gregory David Roberts:
Shantaram is a novel influenced by real events in the life of the author, Australian Gregory David Roberts, filled with mostly fictional adventures. In 1978, Roberts was sentenced to nineteen years' imprisonment in Australia after being convicted of a series of armed robberies of building society branches, credit unions, and shops, which he had committed to feed a heroin addiction after his marriage ended and he lost his daughter. In July 1980, he escaped from Victoria’s Pentridge Prison in broad daylight, thereby becoming one of Australia's most wanted men for the next ten years.
He then flees to India where the novel is set.
A brilliant read, although a bit daunting at 936 pages and what looks like a 6pt font size. Plus, the guy had to write it three times after prison guards trashed the first two versions.
Highly recommended.

'The Infinite Book' [J.D. Barrow] #oh the irony...
The author takes us on a short and pleasantly non-technical tour of the history of the concept of infinity in religion, philosophy, mathematics and physics.
No HIgher Grade or University-Level maths required for this one. [which is more than I can say for a Hawking/Penrose collaboration I found at my library a few years back.]

Book - Neverwhere
Author - Neil Gaiman
Rating - 5/10
I haven't read the comics or watched the tv show. I am a fan of Neil Gaiman though.
Neverwhere could have been much better. It's got a brilliant idea behind it and there are some interesting bits but the characters seem a bit underdeveloped and I for one didn't care about the characters all that much. Some parts of the book felt rushed.
The ending almost saved it. Almost.

I just finished The Host by Stephenie Meyer. Yes, the author of Twilight.
Now this was an interesting one.
It involves a symbiotic species of being from another planet, known as "Souls," that basically take over Earth by inhabiting the bodies of humans. They've done this on a number of planets where intelligent life was present, and Earth is the latest "victim." They only choose planets where they feel the inhabiting races are too violent or unappreciative of their planets.
The story is the tale of a particular soul, named Wanderer, who inhabits a body, but doesn't quite manage to "kill" the human inhabiting the body. She instead has complete control over the body, but shares it with the human in question - Melanie. The problem is that Wanderer inherited many of Melanie's traits...such as particular likes and dislikes, and, of course, whom she loves and hates.
I'm not going to spoil the story, but it's quite post-apocalyptic and rather ironic. The souls are afraid of the few surviving humans who are all in hiding and vice versa. Each deems each other as dangerous. Wanderer embarks on the quest to ensure that Melanie's little brother isn't "seeked" (the process of having one's body taken over) and the rest is for your enjoyment :)
There's definitely clear hints as to who wrote it, but it's slightly darker and less cheesy/soppy. I think because it doesn't involve teenage hormonal vampires adults may enjoy this one more. I found it quite interesting and wouldn't actually mind seeing this adapted into a movie as it as quite a bit of sci-fi to it.
All in all a bit long, but a good read: 8/10

Assassin's Creed: Renaissance is a novel based on the Assassin's Creed series written by Oliver Bowden and published by Penguin Books. It is a novelized version of the popular Ubisoft game Assassin's Creed II, except it is set only in the 15th century; and does not contain the present day events that happen during the game. The novel was released in the UK on the 26th of November, six days after the UK release of Assassin's Creed II. Betrayed by the ruling families of Italy, a young man embarks upon an epic quest for vengeance. To eradicate corruption and restore his family's honor, he will learn the art of the assassin. Along the way, Ezio will call upon the wisdom of such great minds as Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolò Machiavelli - knowing that survival is bound to the skills by which he must live.
To his allies, he will become a force for change - fighting for freedom and justice. To his enemies, he will become a threat dedicated to the destruction of the tyrants abusing the people of Italy. So begins an epic story of power, revenge and conspiracy. I found the novel while browsing through Exclusive Books during my holiday, and I must say it is a really good read and recommended for anyone who likes the Assassin's Creed franchise. The novel stays pretty close to the story of the game with only minor differences here and there, but nothing that is big enough to distract from the overall story and at R180 a pretty good bargain. Not to mention that the book art is absolutely gorgeous.

Got John Dies at the End by David Wong as a birthday gift on friday. Has anybody here read it? Apparently it's like a horror comedy, but pure comedy and pure horror, i.e it's not a horror book trying to be funny or a comedy novel trying to be scary. Dude, do yourself a huge favour and get a hold of this book, it is freaking awesome. I haven't enjoyed reading a book so much in a very long time, when I start reading this I just do not want to put it down. The shit that happens in this book is just insane, e.g. in the prologue there is a "monster" (shaped like a man) that is made of several chunks of meat (with a turkey for a head) that chases the protaganists around - and it talks. It just keeps getting weirder from there ...
So far the book is pretty funny though, David Wong has a really cool writing style and there's some awesome one-liners in there. Haven't really gotten to the scary parts yet, but there are a couple of things that have freaked me out so far.

Story's awesome and if you were a fan of the "sport" (yes, i know it's fake) at the time, well worth it.

Just finished The Magician - Raymond E Feist (again :P) Still a 10/10 book, such a brilliant story and it never really gets dull.

Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan - 10/10. A really good story that is written extremely well, I cannot wait for Broken Angels to arrive at Exclusive Books so I continue the story of Takeshi Kovacs. :D If this book is anything to go buy then Crysis 2 is gonna have one hell of a story to tell.
Richard Morgan is writing for Crysis 2?! Awesome news! I've got all of his books, and apart from The Steel Remains I've loved all of them.
As for rating the last book I read: the Old Man's War trilogy by John Scalzi is in my top ten of sci-fi writers next to Iain M. Banks, Neal Stephenson, Peter F. Hamilton, Robert A. Heinlein, and Frank Herbert. 9/10

LOL, your username suddenly makes a lot of sense :p Why didn't you like Steel Remains? I haven't read it yet, but I've heard that a lot of people who love his other books don't like it.

I don't read much, but I have taken a liking to listening to audiobooks while driving, since most of my trips are 4-9hrs long.
I've just finished the following Dean Koontz titles and thought they were pretty cool!
Relentless 8/10
Book critic is critical!
Velocity 9/10
A barman goes off duty and finds a note stuck to his car "Get the police involved in this I will kill an elderly woman active in social work. If you don't get the police involved in this I will kill a beautiful young school teacher." What do you do?
Then the Odd Thomas series 9/10 was my favourite:
Odd Thomas
Forever Odd
Brother Odd
Odd Hours
You really grow attached to the main character who lives a quiet life as a short order fry cook with the unique ability to see dead people.

Hehehe. I always used Jerichau, but this one is more unique.
Well it's not sci-fi, it's fantasy, and slightly stereotypical fantasy at that, so people expecting Takeshi awesomeness were disappointed. There was also a gay sex scene I had to skip before I chunked. I'm not against poofs, but I don't want to read about it :/ If you happen to be gay or don't get the heebie-da-jeebadies reading about it then you might like it.

I don't really go into any books with any expectations and Altered Carbon was actually the first real Sci-Fi book I read. Usually stick to some fantasy (particularly Robert Jordan) some thrillers (Michael Robotham, Ted Dekker) and any obscure/unorthodox books I come across (Hubert Selby Jr., Mark Z. Danielewski, David Wong). Im also not gay or really bothered if there is a gay sex scene in a book, as long as I don't have to see it in a movie I'm fine :p I don't easily get bothered by stuff like that in books (if it is within context), it's sometimes interesting to see some of the "stranger" things people come up with.

It's _really_ graphic. You should get it and let me know if you get siffed out ;)
I take it you've read the Andrzej Sapkowski translations? Very different vibe to The Witcher game, much lighter, but still good.
Just started reading Way of the Shadows by Brent Weeks, quite good, not your stereotypical fantasy so far (until they whip out a dark lord or long quest).

Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee.... a very, very good book. Give it a 9/10 because 10/10 is too much for the hateful main character.

I've read some pretty sick stuff before, but I'll get it eventually (after finishing the Takeshi novels) and let you know how it goes.
Yeah, I've read The Last Wish and about half of Blood of Elves. The only thing that put me off Blood of Elves were all the political discussions between the kings etc., I just wasn't in the mood for it. Will start reading it again once Times of Contempt is near release (if it ever does get published in English).
