Yoiks. I spend way too much time playing Minecraft already.
So how does Minecraft work exactly? Do you just build stuff? And then the zombie things come at night? Can you build a house to stay in at night?
Check the video on the main page: http://www.minecraft.net/
Same. I have become hooked on it.
Well, the absolute basics is that you can build and craft what you want. It's a sandbox game that allows you to freely create what you want with blocks made of certain materials. You start off by crafting items/tools from easily accessible materials such as wood. You then use those tools to literally mine into the ground. Once you've extract raw resources from the ground you can craft more potent tools and then gather resources to build your uber fortress
If you have ever played Garry's Mod it's actually got some similarity, probably that they are both sandbox.
For a FPS player, it's very different. One serious downside is that the graphics are s*it and a few bugs to be found. But don't expect the classic(free) to be what beta(not free) is about. Classic is horrible in comparison.
I have been playing quite a bit of beta multiplayer, especially with trader system.

How is it on the bandwidth?
It's primarily intended to be an SP game. The MP is still heavily in development, but the BW usage is not huge at all. Unfortunately the server code is severely unoptimised and buggy. There are mods/wrappers out there with plugins that completely change gameplay, so it can be pretty cool.
I've mostly been playing SP lately though.
I've got two servers running on wargeeks.org. A "vanilla" with monsters (basic plugins for warps and homes), and a "mod" server that has bells and whistles, and no beasties at all. Mainly for building. These servers are only really used by 3-4 people at most. One of our players has built some pretty awesome things.
If you're interested, you can look at the maps: http://minecraft.wargeeks.org
The gmap folders has the google maps type interface, and the mcmap folders have the static images.
