"Like a Really Powerful Calculator"
With Android Powered Tablets being all the rage lately, its time we took a look at one.
I picked up the iSonic Tablet because I was curious about the tablets at the lower price point when compared to the one I'm used, the Samsung Galaxy tab.
Testing the tablet, which comes in at around one seventh the Galaxies price I was however surprised ona few occasions as this tiny tablet seems wuite content to handle whatever you throw at it without too much complaining.
Using a tablet for various everyday tasks such as Syncing Files, keeping up to date with Email and on the odd occasion connecting and managing a server or desktop machine remotely the 8 Inch form factor of this tablet appealed to me as it is not as large as an iPad (Also it does not run anything starting with an "i") and not entirely as small as a Dell Streak
** A note about Android - This tablet ships with Android 2.2 which is major improvement over the older 2.0 and 2.1 versions, offering increased stability and better application support.
It is however still a very initimidating OS, coming to grips with the OS itself is the biggest challenge that any user will experience, although once used to Android's way of doing things, the overall experience and functionality does improve dramatically.
Booting the tablet for the first time you are presented with the standard Android 2.2 Desktop, nothing out of te ordinary although the manufacturer has pre installed a number of semi usefull applications such as an Office document Viewer and a media player application.
Under Normal Performace the tablet had no issues connecting to my home or office WiFi Networks and I was up and bowsing in minutes with no major issues aside from the often less than intuitive touch screen feedback, thanks mainly to the fact that this tablet uses a resistive touch screen which is better suited to stylus use than to that of a finger.
Default Applications include Email, Calendar, Adobe Reader as well as a Contact Management application.
Not satisified with the defaults I installed and tested a number of add ons and applications,a list is included in the review to demonstrate the tablet's versatility.
All applications are APK Packages downloaded for free from the large number of online application sites that cater specifically to Android Tablets.
AVG Antivirus (Virus and Malware Protection)
DropBox (Syncing Files between Pc's and Mobile Devices)
Android SSH (Connecting to Remote Servers via SSH Protocol)
RockPlayer (Media and Streaming)
File Expert (File Management and Network File Browser)
Teamviewer (Remote Desktop)
All of these tested applications performed as expected.
Overall the tablet performed remarkably well, even under intense Network usage and prolonged periods of WiFi Connectivity.

24 Pin Connector to expand Tablet Connectivity with one Cat 5 Network and two USB Ports (This is Pure WIN !)
I was impressed by the overall build quality and finishes of the Tablet, Tactile feedback from the screen can be tricky due to Resistive Technology used. Battery Power when connected to WiFi is less than expected, in offline Airplane Mode it is noticeably better
Connectivity is improved through usage of the 24 Pin Expansion Module included, allowing usrs to plug directly into a network instead of using the built In WiFI receiver.
