    Default Internet Security

So I'm looking for internet security. I've been using Norton which I hear is one of the worst. But I need something good that will block all the bad stuff and especially keeps my banking details safe. I just need something that does a proper job without costing a fortune. What are my options?

There are a few options available.

    Avast! Anti-Virus

    http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-...=dl&tag=button

Which is what I use and have been using for the past few years, no problems. And it does its job well enough, and it's free.

    AVG

    http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Vi...=dl&tag=button

Haven't used it in years though, but it was good while it lasted. Started detecting false positives, which is why I stopped using it. And it's also free.

    There are more, such as...

Kaspersky, McAfee and so on, but I haven't used them, so I cannot give my opinion I'm afraid.

If none of these fancy your interest, or, if you're looking for a non-free AV, you can always Google "Anti-Virus", and see what results it provides you with.

I have used Kaspersky before - had no problems. At the moment I'm running Windows 8 and they have protection built in so that's cool.

At the moment I use MSE and Malwarebytes Pro. And Key scrambler but thats pointless since I don't use Firefox or IE.

Yeah if you are on Win7, just grab Microsoft Security Essentials. Works well and is free.

The best internet security however is common sense, don't just click things, read before you DO click things and stay away from dodgy sites.

There's a massive difference between anti-virus software and firewalls. If you want internet security a firewall is the first thing to look into.

First off the Windows firewall is completely useless again anything malicious or anything that doesn't follow it's rules.

The best firewall I've used is Outpost. If you're looking for something free Outpost has a free version with some features removed but still good enough for a home user though there are a number of free alternatives too.

One thing I would avoid though is anything Comodo, their software is adequate but if you actually read their EULA you will need a clean pair of pants.

Been using MSE for years. No problem at all. If you want to buy a anti-virus I suggest ESET NOD 32 another good one.

Thanks for the options guys. I'm still not sure, but will keep them all in mind.

I would rather go for Avira over AVG and MSE.

I used to have AVG and it was great, but after problems where it causes my pc to freeze dead that it requires a cold restart, I was forced to look for alternatives. Issue was related to loading AVG on a Windows 7 pc and using network connections to connect to my ADSL ISP (rather than having it configured via the router).

Used MSE before but it has dropped the ball multiple times. It is like MSE isn't even trying. In fact, I've put my flash drive in computers with MSE on it and after getting it back, I have to remove like 3 different viruses from it.

Never really tried Avast, but after doing some research a while back, I read that Avira / AVG was the preferred choice.
So I installed Avira Free edition and was quite happy. Then when I wanted to upgrade to a premium anti virus, I did some shopping around and decided to simply upgrade my existing Avira free edition to the premium edition (approx. R140) and haven't had any issues since.
Cheap price, good protection and if you get an email that looks like it might be a virus that Avira missed, you simply forward it to virus@avira and they will add it to their virus definitions which will be updated on your pc the next day.

As for Kaspersky, I've mostly heard good things about it, but I've heard (from multiple sources) that some of their software updates can cause havoc and prevent some applications from working.

No guts, no glory, no brain, same story.
