I stopped using anti-virus years ago... I just disable all the access services on my PC, telnet, ssh, remote services etc and as already mentioned before- stay away from dodgy sites on the internet. Never had a problem with spyware or virusses without using anti-virus either.

The first thing to keep in mind is that there is no such thing as Internet Security
If someone with even a moderate amount of skill wants to breach your system, he will

Luckily home users are seldomly targeted for malicious exploitation aside form the obvious
Use MSE, it integrates with the Windows shell and runs light on resources

And if your computer totally dies from virus. Use kaspersky rescue cd, boot into it and remove all viruses. .
I found that this is one of the sure ways to completely remove viruses. Some virus hide in the boot sector and regenerate themselves when you login or just stays in the memory and respawns. But kaspersky rescue cd boots into a linux environment and scans your computer for virus and gets rid of them.

I've used MSE on a previous basis and i wasnt that impressed when i realised that some crazy malware disabled MSE completely.. Since then i have used Avast and i have to say im happy with it. Personally id prefer NOD 3, so far it hasnt let me down.

I use Kaspersky IS at the moment, runs well. I also use Malwarebytes, best anti-spyware program out there.

If you are looking for a free solution, look at Comodo or Zone-Alarm Firewall for a firewall solution. And Avast/AVG for anti-virus.
    And of course, Malwarebytes again.

AVG/Avast? seriously?? Or did it get better in the last 4 years I didn't use it??? I still remember when with both of them couldn't even get rid of autorun virus, but got rid of legitimate .exe instead. Really annoying, it deleted photoshop and other software on my computer with the latest updates (like back in 2008).
