Honestly, what makes reading a comic book in which the protagonist has a gay romance so much different than a comic book in which the protagonist has a heterosexual romance?

You can't tell other people to respect people's preferences and then complain about someone's preference.
If someone doesn't want to watch or read something where the protagonist is gay, that is their choice. Just because you would rather not watch it doesn't mean you think it shouldn't exist.
I'm just surprised people still have issues with homosexuality. It's pretty much the same as saying 'I'm not going to read that because it has a black protagonist'.
