oh ya I did the strainer trick too a little while ago and elevated it with a mic stand, worked a charm.

all i need is a usb extension cable then im trying it
Just an update: I tried the strainer trick last night with my 8ta sim. The signal went from 0/5 bars to 3/5... which averages as a 2-5 meg line... I'm still in shock
I could even play ME3 multiplayer last night with no lag

Idea i want to actually try but dont think it will work for me (since im already nearly at max signal), if you can try this dee.
Take the strainer cover it with foil (but u still got the hole for the usb), technically that should take all the signal that is actually going through the strainer and bounce it to the 3G
