(1996) Resident Evil ( 1st proper survival horror game, still going strong to this day)
(1998) Unreal + Half Life (Because they were fucking awesome, something that today's developers should look at and see how amazing they were and then look at the cookie cutter fps crap of today)

Definitely agree on Half Life redefining story telling in the FPS genre.

My mention would go to Tomb Raider for it's massive influence on 3D platforming.

Sid Meier's Civilization series for turn based strategy games

Or might be too broad of a genre, since it also includes games like Disciples and Heroes of Might & Magic...

Nah definitely not the original, but being biased (Civ2 was the first game I've ever bought) I would say it had the biggest impact

I don't know if this has been posted

    But...

Far Cry 2 FPS: it erases the lines between Open World And FPS

And ALL the lara crofts for being a female based game

Far Cry 2... lol, how about the original Far Cry or even Crysis? Even then you would some argument from Deus Ex since that was semi-open but considering the time that was a pretty damn huge step. In fact Deus Ex needs to be on the list somewhere, not quite sure where though. RPG elements, semi-open world, decision and consequence system, multiple endings, persistent world, so many things.

FPS - for me it was probably Half Life and Counter Strike (Far Cry is also up there).

FPS - Unreal Tournament, Quake Arena & Serious Sam for the point and shoot in a map environment.

RTS - Age of Empires 2, Warcraft 2 and Starcraft ... special mention to Anno1602.

Turn-based strategy - Sid Meier's Civilization II ... although I thought Civ IV got it 'most' right.

FC2 has been one of my all time favourites. Of all the FPS games I have played, this has been my favourite by a country mile. Only Serious Sam comes close on more time spent playing.
