The 5 best games of 2009 vs. The best of 2010 so far

The first half of 2010 has been far more impressive than the same period last year

July 5, 2010

Metacritic has published a feature listing the best reviewed games of 2010 so far. There are some pretty impressive titles on the list, and there is no denying that 2010 has been a great year for gamers so far, especially compared to early 2009 which I found just a little dry in comparison.

The 5 best games of 2009 (First 6 months)

1. Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360 & PS3) 93%

2. Killzone 2 (PS3) 91%

3. Empire: Total War (PC) 90%

    Plants Vs Zombies (PC) 90%

    MLB: The Show (PS3) 90%

Average: 90.8%

The 5 best games of 2010 (First 6 months)

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) 98%

2. Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360, PC) 95%

3. Red Dead Redemption (PS3, Xbox 360) 95%

4. Super Street Fighter IV (PS3, Xbox 360) 92%

5. God of War III (PS3) 92%

Average: 94.4%

If we look at just the top 5 games this year, the combined average is higher than the best scoring game over the same period in 2009. Of course the top 5 does not even tell the full story, and titles like Bad Company 2, Bioshock 2, Alan Wake and Heavy Rain have also been excellent, if perhaps not as well received by critics at large.

2009 however finished very well, with Modern Warfare 2, Forza 3, Dragon Age, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted 2,  Assassin’s Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 all bringing up the rear. Will 2010’s second half be as good? Well, we have a lot to look forward to, including StarCraft II, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Medal of Honor, Crysis 2, The Last Guardian, Mafia 2, and my personal favourite, Civilization V.
