Syndicate reboot doomed from the start, says developer
Haters gonna hate, etc.
As the old adage goes, one should let sleeping dogs lie. Or, in the context of the games industry, let classic games we once loved live on in our memories, and not in reboots, or they won’t be exactly the same as we remember them, or they’ll be totally different, and that makes us maaaaaaad. Or something like that.
Despite the game’s commercial failure, however, Starbreeze boss Mikael Nermark feels okay about his studio’s Syndicate reboot. Some people, he reckons, you just can’t please.
“I’m still proud of it. To have the courage to reboot the franchise – we knew from the get-go that there was going to be a small but very vocal [group] of gamers and journalists that was going to hate us whatever route we took,” he told EDGE.
“If we didn’t do an exact copy of the game, they’d hate us. If we did do an exact copy, they’d say we didn’t innovate. They were never ours to win; it was a lost battle from the get-go.”
Or maybe it just wasn’t, you know, that great. The game has an average of 74 on Metacritic, although reviews are mixed, ranging from 100 to just 40.
MyGaming’s Jaco van der Walt said in his Syndicate review:
In essence Syndicate is an FPS that tries to sell itself as a tactical shooter. While, like most shooters, it has a dismissible story there’s plenty of fast-paced action to keep you interested. The futuristic theme coupled with the splendid Skrillex remix should appeal to a number of gamers – just don’t expect too much from this game.
In five years, we’ll probably talk about how underrated it was.
