Atari celebrates 40 years of gaming with free stuff!

Can you believe it’s been 40 years since Atari opened for business? I haven’t even been alive that long. I didn’t know that anybody was even alive 40 years ago. I mean, that’s like forever ago. Gondwanaland and velociraptors and all that.

Opening a video game business back then was way risky, but apparently it’s paid off for Atari – enough that, today and today only, you can get 100 Atari games for free from the iOS App Store.

That’s a savings of $9.99, which 40 years ago would have bought you a whole cave in the nice part of the Paleocene, with enough left over to put your kids through a good hunter-gatherer school.

The Atari Greatest Hits app includes Atari classics like, you know, basically everything you remember playing when you were five – Centipede, Asteroids, Lunar Lander, Pong, Breakout, and ninety-five more.

The app is free to download, but be warned – if you delete the app from your iThing, you won’t be able to get it back without paying for it.
