Blizzard banning Linux players from Diablo III

Banhammers for users of “Unapproved Third Party Software”

The ongoing drama around Diablo III is back in the news today, with Linux players complaining that they’re being banned for, well, using Linux.

According to a series of posts over on the Diablo III forums, Linux users had been happily playing Diablo III through Wine (a Linux application that runs Windows-based programs) up until a day or so ago, when the banhammers started coming down on them.

After logging tickets with Blizzard’s customer support, they were told the bans would stay in place, citing the use of “Unapproved Third Party Software”. Which, technically, Linux is, but… it’s Linux, not Cheatz_4_Eva.bat.

Also, if Blizzard didn’t want Linux users playing the game, why not make that a rule from launch day? It’s been almost two months since the game came out, and now they’ve decided to ban them? Maybe somebody over at Blizzard HQ just hates penguins.

The drama remains ongoing. Obviously.
