Sony: “It’s too early for a Vita price cut”
Sony plans to focus on bundles to improve sales
The struggling sales of the PS Vita have left many to wonder if the device just isn’t a little expensive. Much speculation has been had over whether or not a price cut could be what the Vita needs to help boost sales – much like we saw previously with the Nintendo 3DS.
Now would be a particularly good time due to the upcoming holiday season (Thanksgiving is looming in America), but Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida says people shouldn’t get their hopes up anytime soon.
“People like cheap or free,” he said. “Of course, cost reduction is one area our engineering team is working on. But we just launched the platform earlier this year. It takes time to do so.”
“At a certain point in the future we would like to address the pricing issue for some of the people who are waiting. But this year we are trying to add value by creating different types of bundles. We announced we will provide LittleBigPlanet PS Vita bundle pack. That’s affordable for people who are looking for a good deal.”
When asked more directly, Yoshida responded, “No, it’s too early.”
Nintendo’s 3DS price cut came only 6 months after the console’s release, when the Japanese manufacturer made the decision to cut the price in North America by a healthy 90 dollars. The 3DS has seen drastically improved sales since then, and Nintendo even recently launched the 3DS XL. Sony may be waiting on some bigger Vita titles to help increase interest in the device, since price cuts are presumably a last resort.
