New PS3 model SA pricing and availability revealed

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) recently announced a new PlayStation 3 model, featuring a new design and a downsized form factor.

The new PS3 will become available in South Africa from mid-October.

The new PS3 will come in two models:

• PlayStation 3 – 500GB Hard Disk Drive – R 3,999.99 (RRP)
• PlayStation 3 – 12GB flash memory model – R 2,899.99 (RRP)

The new version of the console is approximately 20 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter when compared to the current PS3 model. The design features a minor gloss near the edges and a ridged top panel.

The console also features a sliding door panel to top-load the discs, as opposed to the slot-loading of the current models.

Owners of the 12GB model will be able to connect a 3.5-inch SATA internal hard drive with use of an official mounting bracket, or opt for purchase of an official PlayStation 250GB internal HDD. The recommended retail pricing (RRP) for the 250GB HDD is yet to be confirmed.

When using a dedicated HDD, flash memory cannot be used as inner storage.

Sony has also announced a vertical stand accessory for the new model, sold separately. SA RRP is yet to be confirmed.
