Borderlands 2 box art plagiarised from popular artist
Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford promises “consequences”
British artist Olly Moss has shown evidence that one of Gearbox’s artists plagiarised his art for Borderlands 2.
Moss is a prolific artist in the movie and video game industry, designing posters for high profile films such as The Dark Knight and cover art for games such as Resistance 3.
The accusation came via Twitter, where moss wrote: “I’m a huge Gearbox fan so I was really disappointed to see this image inside the Borderlands 2 box,” following it up with this image:
One of his followers then posted an image of Moss’s prior work, and the evidence of plagiarism is quite damning. Check it out:
Moss continued, “Technically whoever made the image did lift directly from mine.”
He also added the go-to guilt trip that he “wasn’t angry, just disappointed”.
“Gearbox is one of my favourite developers. Would have jumped at the opportunity to work with them. Oh well,” he said.
Gearbox head Randy Pitchford contacted Moss via Twitter, apologising for the incident and promising “consequences” for whoever was responsible.
“You’re amazing. Inspiration is part of art and you’ve inspired us. But the bit that was lifted is uncool, so… consequences.
“We should be working together to do it right and legit,” Pitchford added.
To Moss’s credit, he’s remained pretty unfazed about it, replying, “This whole thing is so far from a big deal. I wish I’d never even said anything.”
