Party favourite SingStar may be going free-to-play
Discontinued song browser hints at free-to-play model incoming
It looks like another game is going to try rope customers in with the free-to-play model, as Sony has suggested that their karaoke series SingStar is going free-to-play.
The news comes via the SingStar Viewer app on the PS3, which if currently accessed will tell players that it has been discontinued.
The message reads as follows: “Support for the SingStar Viewer has been discontinued. The complete SingStar experience will be available as a free download very soon!”
Fans took to Twitter to question the message, and the SingStar Twitter feed responded by saying an announcement is likely coming next week.
The SingStar Viewer was a free tool which allowed aspiring Youtube stars to browse through the various SingStar songs available and purchase them, as well as view videos uploaded by other SingStars. Of course, you had to own the SingStar game in order to play the purchased songs.
It would seem however that now Sony is looking to make the software itself free-to-play, likely with a couple of songs included, and monetise the game by allowing users to purchase various songs for the game.
