Rice University offers a new course – in Skyrim
All these years wasted on BOOKS
While I probably spent more time at University playing video games than attending lectures, I never really had much of a justification other than waking up before 10am was an unreasonable request.
Clearly I went to the place for tertiary education however, as the Department of English at Rice University in Houston, Texas now has you playing Skyrim for University credit. More specifically, you’ll be studying “Scandinavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim.” So yeah, Skyrim.
The course description attempts to justify the course as follows: This course has two goals. First, it introduces students to fantasy as both psychological concept and driving force in gamer culture; and second, using these paradigms, it considers how and why medieval Scandinavia serves as a locus of modern Anglo-American fantasy. To these ends, students will read selections from Old Norse and Old Icelandic sagas (in translation) as they play different quests within Skyrim.”
Perhaps I can get an Honorary degree?
