The transfer rate of USB 3.0 is set to double from 5 gigabits per second to 10.

Announced at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, the USB 3.0 Promoter Group said that an enhancement will “add a much higher data rate, delivering up to twice the data through-put performance of existing SuperSpeed USB over enhanced, fully backward compatible USB connectors and cables.”

The enhancement is expected to be completed by the middle of the year, and will also add improved data encoding, more efficient data transfers, and compatibility with existing 5Gbps hubs and devices.
