Reverse engineering specialists reveal Wii U’s GPU power
The mystery surrounding the Wii U’s graphics power has finally been answered. As reported by Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry, through the community driven efforts of NeoGAF, there are now detailed images of the inner working of the Wii U processors.
Thanks to some pretty detailed polysilicon die photography of the Wii U GPU, we can now get a good look at what’s packing in the visual punch of Nintendo’s new console.
The ultra-magnified shots reveal that the GPU’s core features 320 stream processors married up with 16 texture mapping units, and also features 8 (render output units) ROPs.
The chip is said to be a “close match” to the Radeon 4650/4670, “albeit with a deficit in the number of texture-mapping units and a lower clock speed–550MHz.”
The Nintendo Wii U is also now said to have the capability to surpass the Xbox 360’s Xenos GPU, with “1.5 times the raw shader power”.
That said, 1080p resolution requires 2.5x the power required for 720p, and the fact that the Wii U has just eight ROPs, means that its “highly unlikely that we’ll be seeing any complex 3D titles running at 1080p.”
In terms of being in line with the next generation of Microsoft and Sony consoles, if the leaked specs are to be believed, the Xbox 720 and PS4 are in “a completely different league”.
