Sam Raimi has decided to direct another movie, bringing into question his role in the WoW movie

Adding to the deluge of video game movie news over the last week is word on the World of WarCraft movie. It appears that director Sam Raimi has decided to get some work done whilst Blizzard and WoW movie rights holder Legendary Pictures get their ducks in a row.

Raimi has been confirmed to be directing a Disney spearheaded Wizard of Oz prequel – Oz: The Great and Powerful. Disney plans to begin shooting sometime next year, bringing into the question the likelihood of Raimi returning to the WarCraft movie project any time soon.

Blizzard doesn’t appear to be in any rush to get the WoW movie done however, and it makes good business sense. The WarCraft IP and its related MMO game (that some of you may have heard of) probably props up half of the Activision Blizzard company. It would be really bad to damage the brand with a sloppy B-grade movie. Charles Roven, producer of The Dark Knight is on board, so that’s a good sign.

Blizzard’s vice president of creative development, Chris Metzen, spoke about the WoW movie back in July 2010, saying that Raimi was still very passionate about the movie but the process had slowed whilst they tried to get a treatment approved. Perhaps Raimi decided to get a job until the process speeds up once again?

There has been no comment from Blizzard or Legendary Pictures.
