The thing is, I'm there on a work trip. Using a pool car from the CT office, which is tracker equipped. The office pays for everything, I can't expect them the cover my travels/gallivanting as well.

While I admire your work ethic, your work also needs to understand that you are spending a week away from home/family/friends/whatever so it's only natural that you would want to do a bit more than wake up, eat, work, go back to your B&B, eat, sleep, repeat." They aren't paying you for those hours, are they?

As long as you're paying for the fuel and your own expenses outside of work hours, I don't see an issue.

The only possible issue is the insurance on a work vehicle, hence why I would argue that a rental would be a better solution with liability being yours for any damage to the vehicle outside of work hours.

But fine, fine. Have it your way :p
