Aren't the cards worth more if you sell them directly than the gems?

You also get gems (ALOT more) if you turn icons or backgrounds into gems (80-100 per), which is what i did. had a handful of 3c icons/background which i turned into PoE cards and got almost $2. definately more than I'd have gotten from selling them directly
