switching installations to second hard drive

hey guys,

so I installed windows onto my SSD and partitioned my other HDD but how do i get all other programs to install to the HDD by default?

I read online you can go into the registry and change some things around in there but I'm not fully comfortable with that since I'm new to the whole scene. What can I do to change the default location?

Uhh, shouldnt you just tell each program to install to the hdd AS you install them?

Yeah, that's how I do it. And once you install Steam on second drive ("D:\Games\Steam") it will obviously remember that when downloading/installing subsequent games.

okay so the safest would just be to change it during istallation? thought there might be a better way. my SSD is only 120Gb so just wanted to make sure i always had some space there, is it true that the fuller they get the slower they work?

I doubt that's the case as it's solid state, kinda the point in it. Does your flash drive become slower when its full?

Though they do have a read/write cycle (lifespan), something a lot of consumers aren't made aware of when making an SSD purchase.

Keepa34 Its mechanical drives that get slower the fuller they get, due to the mathematics of the circle :)

SSD's its all about the writes baby. Get your zip/rar apps to store their "temp" files on the other drive, get your documents/video/music folders (the one per user) to relocate to the other drive (very easy to get windows to do it, think its right click on folder, properties, and select location?) (as theres no speed advantage to opening an mp4 or a docx file with SSD or hdd :p)

That should clear up some more space.

Also, my steam install is on my C drive (SSD). I just have the game install/download folder elsewhere :)

Start > Run >
Type regedit and click OK.
Scroll to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE \Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion
On the right window, double click on the key ProgramFilesDir and modify it to include the new path for the installation folder.

That will change the "goto" folder for installs even though you can individually during those installs should you change your mind
