Hi,

So, earlier today I posted a debate about god/religion and it got deleted. I posted it in the off topic thread where i though is the correct place. Apparently there is no place to discuss religion on this website. Well done, i thought you were open minded people here, guess not.

im a gamer and wanted to discuss it with other gamers. Guess there is no freedom of speech on this website. You delete my post because it questions other people's faith and it is out of place? Out of place in the off topic section! well done guys. pat your self on the back.

This is quoted from the forum rules (which you should have read before posting):

MyGaming reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason.

MyGaming reserves the right to remove or edit posts which, in the opinion of the moderators, are offensive or unlawful, but shall not be obliged to do so and expressly disclaims any liability arising from the use or non-use of such editorial control. Members are reminded to consider their posts - content which is defamatory or which infringes on the intellectual property of another may lead to legal action being taken against them.

It probably has to do with religion being a contentious issue for most people, which causes endless arguments and flaming for no real benefit.

Open Minded? This is a gaming site? Religious debates shouldn't be posted or allowed here as all it does is cause flaming and fighting.

As Kimitar says above. It is a contentious issue. In that thread I did point out that we have an unofficial rule that we don't discuss religion. It just leads to grief. I don't think it was mod action on its own, someone probably reported the thread.

We once had a discusion on Religion stuff and well lets just say a lot of angry people and it got nowhere fast.

You seem a doos, judging by all your other posts and you want to continue your doosery by having an uneeded religious thread .......... go play in traffic

In case you didn't notice, nobody even wanted to read all your posts, so it was pretty pointless anyway.

ah, i see over on mybroadband they actually have a section for philosophy. Ill go post my stuff there.
But again, here there is no place for people to debate about the subject and that has been made very clear. Censorship is the order of the day.

I wonder how debating about religion i can be a doos? i guess that is just the easy argument, when u dont understand something you throw explitives at it. no worries i understand man.

no not censorhip we as gamers just don't want it here you can make a thread and some will respond but most of us will just keep out of it.

Just climbing in here to give everyone a friendly reminder to keep it civil, and to give a name and face to the person who deleted the thread (it was me!).

The reason for deletion was: "Religious debates are discouraged on MyGaming."

There are already personal attacks in this thread, which I will send warnings for.

I for one don't mind a civil religious discussion, but as has been stated, the religion car does the quarter mile from civil to flame wars in under 10 seconds.

If you want to get philosophical, how about the issue of "freedom of speech" rather than religion. Here I'll start with a definition from Wikipedia:

Wikipedia said:
Freedom of speech is the right to communicate one's opinions and ideas without fear of government retaliation or censorship.

I would therefore argue that the Freedom of Speech was not violated today. You're free to say what you like in South Africa, but depending on where and how you say it it will have different social consequences.

Here, the thread got deleted. On other forums it may be welcomed. Elsewhere it could get you summarily thrown out.

Just because the thread was deleted here, that doesn't stop you from communicating your opinion anywhere else. You can set up your own website/Wordpress/Tumblr and post it there without fear that you will face government retaliation or censorship.

Religion, by its nature, is something that cannot really be "debated" or "argued" in any realistic way, because the whole point of faith is that it's considered a virtue to believe something without evidence, or even despite evidence (whether this is a "good" or "bad" thing is irrelevant, it's about how it makes you feel or how it helps you cope or whatever).

There is no real way to convince people of your point of view when it comes to this kind of thing, it's something they have to work out for themselves.

There is a time and a place for everything. This is a gaming site so we prefer gaming and geek related posts here.

It's why I don't start threads about the detention party at sound barrier here, sure it would be interesting to discuss but this isn't the place.

Why don't you state it in the rules that posts about religion is not allowed? That way, people unfamiliar with the forum's "unofficial rules" won't post to begin with?

I have dealt with it, but i thought if this was included in the rules, then there wont even be a need to delete posts. Wont that make life easier?
