Morning fellow fellows and lasses

I just scrolled past several videos linked on the forum before I realised, I CAN WATCH THEM! Youtube videos have always been blocked, but now they aren't.
Don't know if someone messed something up or if it will stay like this, but it would be really great if it did. Then I don't have to catch up on all the videos only when I get home.

You 100% sure you're set? You'll join an awesome, like-minded team of 12 (mostly) gaming, (mostly) sports and (mostly) metal fanatics with a family-like bond. We work hard and learn continuously and we're set to (finally) reap some big rewards soon.

Don't be afraid of the change. I've been through enormous transformations in my life this past year and I can honestly say I'm better off for it. I was dead sure I'll finish off my career at my previous employer where I was for 9 years, but I realise now I was only being prepared for something much larger. Branching out into multiple tech stacks has tought me (and my team) the fundamentals running through each of them and has made us better architects and engineers throughout.

Whatever you do, don't become complacent and stagnate, especially in the ever-evolving software engineering industry. I've run into numerous old hands now that are set in their ways and seldom embrace new tech and methodologies. It really is a move it or lose it industry. :)

Dammit dont you need someone who can do the books, general office admin and so forth?? :P You tempted me to move up there :p

I lived around 7km from where I worked at one point. Now I work ~30km away from home. It stopped becoming an issue after a week or so and you adjust quite quickly. Satisfaction and growth at work trumps travel time any day. Within reason, of course. :)

Plus, carpooling sometimes makes travel a heck of a lot more bearable.

It's a difficult one FarligOpptreden. See currently I live very close to where I work and I earn a good salary. I've been with this company for 6 years now though and I can do with a change. Let me sleep on it and I'll let you know.

120 km, guys. For breaking even. But the job is fun as hell, and I couldn't find anything in Witbank, so I jumped in with both feet. I just wish I could work remotely, as a big part of my job is CAD and coding...

Watch this space... We're currently insourcing those services. We cancelled our office lease due to nobody ever being at the office - all our work is done on-site at clients. Once we stabilize with another contract or two we'll be looking at offices again, because we'll have a couple of people who will need permanent seats that WON'T be working at a client.

CAD and coding? That sounds interesting.

CAD and coding? That sounds interesting.

I'm a mechanical engineer that does it all from scratch - I design the machine (CAD), get the parts made in our workshop or contract them out if we're too busy (which is normally the case), I put it all together (my least favourite part), and then I make the machine run with PC interfaces to motors and sensors like phidgets. We're writing our code in java, so that we have less legacy issues than what my boss ran into with an old VB driven machine he had to fix recently, and so that we can run on any platform. I've commissioned a small machine driven by a Raspberry Pi and touch screen!

There are literally only 3 things I'd wish to change about my job:
* Be closer. I spend at least 2.5 hours in the car each day, it's getting old now.
* Be able to remote. I don't need to be at the office every day.
* Be paying a bit more. Seriously, I'm working for peanuts, and I've got 5 years of experience, and post-grad qualifications!

Quit, become a street person or something. Just don't become a vegan hipster.

Hehehehe I have been tempted Psyco :D And Farlig if the offer worth my relocating, I would consider it seriosuly :D

EDIT: Speaking of android, do we actually have android app devs on MyG?

Great, where are you based? And do you want to come work for me? :p

I need a .NET guy urgently at a client. I have one of my senior guys there already and the client wanted another guy pronto... Like in tomorrow pronto.

LOL, job offers out of the blue....

Thanks dude, but I don't think it's a good time for a change right now, I'm deep into a few really big projects, and the company I'm at, and have been at since 2006 is very much like a family, so it would be really hard to leave.

Also, I've only recently been getting into MVC and EF. I've been working with .Net web forms, T-SQL, HTML, CSS, JS, etc for ever, but if you want a senior MVC guy, I'm still feeling like a bit of a noob in that area.

Plus, we've just moved slightly closer to home, and having to drive to Sandton CBD would be a killer.

If you're looking to outsource anything though, give me a shout, we also do design and UX consulting. I can also put you in touch with people if you need anything done for print, especially annual reports and financial adverts for the papers.

MyGaming is still rather quiet even with the competition going.

Ah, shucks. If you did web forms properly, you would've naturally migrated to an MVC-way of thinking by doing AJAX via page methods. So going full-blown MVC won't be that hard at all.

I was in a similar position years ago - started at company in 2005 and pretty much built up their whole product and legacy single-handedly. I had nothing to show for it after a bitter parting in 2014.

Where are you based though? With your experience I can use someone in our Pretoria East client as well... Got 2 people stationed there already and we might need a third (senior) guy with some upcoming projects there as the workload will just be too high for my current resources. And you'll get to work with my proprietary MVC and ORM tool, as well as joining a long-standing MyGamer there.

If you're looking to outsource anything though, give me a shout, we also do design and UX consulting. I can also put you in touch with people if you need anything done for print, especially annual reports and financial adverts for the papers.

Thanks, but my wife works for one of the biggest idenepdent printers in the country and I have a great relationship with the top execs there already. :)

As for UX, that's my passion and speciality. I do it out of love, even if it has to happen after hours. We're kinda renowned for our "sexy GUI's" (client's own words) already.
