The Motivation Thread

Everything is pretty chilled right now, however , from experience it usually fleets. I expect some vicissitudes in the near future "whistling:

How have you guys been doing?

I've been really great at setting an hour aside each evening and getting work done. But.... I freaken haven't been able to get up early to go to the gym. I just feel so tired. I went to bed at 9 last night and only got up at 6:30 this morning and still feel tired. To get up at 5 is just so difficult.

Tonight I'm going to put my phone way on the other side of the room and hopefully force myself to get up early tomorrow.

I was at home with the flu 3 days last week. I was absolutely useless; I couldn't even game decently. So my own projects have ground to a halt. Since then, the wife was down with the flu as well, and now she's studying for exams, so I'm trying to support. Luckily my work projects have been going well, even though I had to put in some time over the weekend too.

I will be finishing the second assignment tonight if all goes well. I have completely lost myself in my studies. I find myself reading more and more about complex business paradigms and I'm developing this habit of analyzing and and all business related things from a systems thinking approach. I also have this craving of creating something like a website or a Youtube channel in which I discuss and break these complex business ideas down for more people to understand

Then, on the health part, I've slipped the past 3 days and have been eating like a bad boy. I've also not been to the gym in 3 days. Yet. the last time I was there I've lost 2.5kgs, which is great. Just got to get myself back into the bloody gym and get myself eating correct again.

Also, I did something crazy, and signed myself up for a speed dating event tomorrow night. I'f I'm changing my life, might as well go crazy and change everything, right?

Good for you, man. Trying anything new is re-invigorating, so it can only do you well. Worst case scenario, you lose a night that you would've spent gaming.

Well.... been struggling to find motivation of late. Between a full time job, freelancing a second, full time dad, girlfriend, moving house and general life obligations... haven't had any time for gaming of late.

Just completed my module 5 assignments, which marks the halfway point in the course. It's really going by quickly and getting more challenging. But thus far I am happy with my grades.

Well.... peace out.

-Done with exams, awaiting for the results.

-Telkom made a blunder and our ADSL line is now going to take even longer *roles eyes*

- That is why, in most cases I expect the worst so that when things do go awry, I'm not at all as disappointed as I would have been. :)

I've also been really demotivated this last while. Since my wife's accident we have had one car less which is a hassle. So hopefully we'll get another car again soon. Also I haven't gone to the gym in, what, two weeks now? :( I'm just struggling to keep up. And my project hasn't had much love either.

So yes, I must make a plan.

I decided to learn Unity and it's going quite well. Luckily I know C# inside out, so I'm only getting to grips with the Unity editor, game objects, etc. I've started 2 projects in Unity so far and fiddled around with player movement, camera controls, physics, lighting and level generation using a script and prefabs. I've got a plan for a game I want to build and publish on Steam.

It seems we've all had a bit of a dip in our motivation. Life tends to happen and try to get us down. It sucks!! Believe me, I know. But, this is the MOTIVATION thread, not the wallow in self pity thread. We've all started our path to something better, something we wanted, something we need to change. And it's going to get tough. The world will turn against us. There will be many stumbling blocks. The point is that we just need to refocus and continue on our path.

I've been working my ass of in my studies. I've missed social interactions, parties and various other stuff because I had to study. And every single day I get up and think fuck this shit! I am not ready to do all this work. But you know what? My first assignment came back and I got 85%. I am so chuffed with myself! It keeps me grinding on, because I know the sacrifices I make right now will make a difference in the future. I've seen it happen, and I cannot give up right now.

So, I've stocked my house with healthy food, I've found a gym partner that will be pushing me to go to the gym, and I've planned my study times better to ensure I can still get to everything.

Also, I want to share the following video. It's all kinds of cheesy, but you know what, it's all true!

WELCOME TO THE GRIND!!!

This was fantastic, I hope whe can expect a weekly article like this from you? ;)

Oooo let me know if you want to employ me full time to build it. :D

And let me know if you want to put it on Github for other to help/play/break. I'm keen on getting to grips with C# properly, and I've I've got bucketloads of parametric modeling experience, which might come in handy for mapping and some certain object models.

Your name actually came to mind, as the game I'm planning on building is actually a tower-building sim (similar to good old SimTower, but a modern 3D take on it) as I just love me some light sim games. Think Cities Skylines with a dash of Theme Hospital, but focusing on only 1 building at a time. So modelling the interior of stores, offices, hotels, apartments, etc in a fairly realistic way will add to the immersion of the game. So yes, an engineer's touch will be required in this game.

Regarding the C# experience, by the looks of it you actually need the bare minimum experience in it as most of the "game" logic is handled by the Unity engine itself. Custom scripts are only required to control the player, manipulate the camera and interact with game objects in a scene. Even then you write 10-15 lines of code and achieve a lot with it.

I think I might just recruit a crack team of core contributors to the game if they share my vision for the project. I'm trying to keep it fairly small for now (5 people max) as managing a huge team on a project becomes a full-time job. The project is still very much in its infancy, but I've been toying with the idea in my head for a couple of years already.

Solitude Unfortunately full-time employment on the project is still very much a no-no, as I'm doing this more out of passion and curiosity from a hobbyist perspective than anything else. If it takes off and sells bucketloads on Steam it's obviously beneficial and can lead to a full-time focus in (free and paid) DLC and more games... Just beware that I'm an absolute terror to work with as my standards for work quality are very high. I'd like to say I'm joking, but sadly I'm not. :(

Oh, I loooooooooved SimTower. I'll definitely be able to do some good there, it's the more organic type models that I'll be less useful with until I get to grips with non-parametric (read: gaming and CGI type) modelling. I'll go read up on the different formats the Unity uses, and what's recommended to go from where I am to what skills it requires.

Parametric is great but then I miss it in other modeling programs.
FarligOpptreden Did you chose Unity because of C# ? Had a look at Unreal Engine 4?

Hehe fair enough. I've been working on and off on a game for so long now. Sigh unfortunately I have to choose between lots of projects and playing games. And for now I have a more important project plus lots of gaming tomorrow.

Good to find another SimTower fan! I've been yearning for a remake and there's one on the cards by another dev soon, but I want to take it to a new perspective (3D pun intended). AFAIK Unity supports quite a lot of formats and I'm guessing the cheapest route would be to go with Blender.

I did consider Unreal Engine as I used to build maps for the original Unreal unsing UnrealEd in my spare time when I was still at school. I wanted a new challenge and seeing as some of my favourite recent games were built in Unity (Ori and the Blind Forest, Homeworld Deserts of Kharak and Cities Skylines) I decided to give it a bash. After working through the "roll a ball" tutorial in around 2 hours I was in love with it, so it just stuck.

EDIT: Oh, and the ease of building for other platforms is also a huge plus (Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, iDevices, XBOX, Playstation, the list goes on).

Yeah, time is always a problem. I realised I need to start focussing on hobbies and, seeing as few games really sucked me in recently, I decided to start learning a new development platform. My wife took up art classes on weekends and has loads of homework to do during the week, so it gives me a lot of time over weekends and evenings to focus on my new hobby. Hopefully I can start another company soon that focuses purely on game development. :p
