Sony Dominating Microsoft's Goal

Microsoft came into this generation thinking that digital distribution was the key. They made a deal with Toshiba to attach an external HD-DVD player to their Xbox 360 knowing that it wasn’t a proven format. All didn’t go too well for Toshiba and their HD-DVD players as Sony’s newer high definition format, Blu-ray, put HD-DVD out of business. Sony made a smart move by including a Blu-ray player in every PlayStation 3 that gave Blu-ray the boost it needed to gain ground and eventually surpass HD-DVD in sales. Blu-ray was the obvious victor here and continues to rise in sales and become more and more popular.

Now it wasn’t a loss for Microsoft because they knew HD-DVD wasn’t a proven format. Matter in fact, it was a very smart move to not include a HD-DVD player in the 360 knowing that Blu-ray holds more space and supports more audio formats. They would have been stuck with a dead format and would have wasted a lot of money. The thing is, Microsoft has stated that this generation is all about digital distribution, and stands by their word. If so, it looks as if Sony is actually about to dominate in that area also with the recent announcement that they will be releasing fully fledged games on the PSN. They already have started their digital distribution passé with Socom Confrontation, Burnout Paradise, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and Warhawk. Right now they are two steps ahead of Microsoft in Microsoft’s own vision. But also Sony has proven that it is not all about digital distribution as Blu-ray sales continue to rise and shatter records.
So now we have Sony playing the role of Blu-ray format and are about to take control of the digital distribution from all angles, meanwhile Microsoft seems to be stuck in a position of overwhelming fear that Sony might take over digital distribution before them. Microsoft does have a signed contract with Netflix and does have arcade games on Xbox Live, but Sony also has a video store and PSN games. Sony has brought full next generation titles to digital distribution and will be continuing to do so. And at the same time Sony is building Blu-ray as the high definition format of the 21st century which is the complete opposite of digital distribution. Microsoft better look out because Sony is really kicking this year off with some big things and huge blockbuster titles.

Eh, what exactly do they consider the Xbox Originals to be? Last I checked those are full games.

Yes, I know that, but that doesn't change the fact that Microsoft have been selling full games for some time via Xbox Live. That hardly puts Sony 2 steps ahead.

Then how about this:

So how did M$ plan on making digital distribution the way of the future with their 20gb HDD's?.Sony's DD is a very viable option for SA users since we can download media with local cap and no membership which is definately huge for us.

I totally agree with this point and this definitely disproves your statement. Every single PS3 owner has an HDD that came with the console. Plus they can easily buy a bigger HDD and swap it. MS has their own HDDs at ridiculous prices and are limited to 120GB (which hardly anybody has). They have made no provision for this at all.

That is indeed true - the hard drives will not work in Microsoft's favour at all, but that is not what we are discussing here. It's the availability of full games to customers. The difference is that Microsoft are offering Xbox originals and Sony newer games. Either way they're both offering full games for download (which the article in your first post fails to mention).

Also, remember that PS3 owners paid for their hard drives and other features. You can see that by the large price difference between the two consoles. That price point is what is currently hurting Sony.

Okay I see what you are getting at, but the point is that they are offering the games that you would find in store, right at your TV. Xbox 360 does offer Xbox originals which are no longer available in retail stores, but if you want a new release you gotta get off your backside. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's a feature that might just sway somebody's choice. :)

Aren't MS supposed to be releasing all the latest games via XBox live as well? I seem to recall something like this on the cards.
Although we will suffer in SA again... :(

Nope. They have no plans of doing that, but even if they do (as you said) we will suffer because (1) we can not keep up with our Internet speed and cap and (2) they will probably block us off due to the lack of a local server, etc. (3) Plus, how will they keep control of release dates. And (4) where exactly will Xbox 360 users store their games? On 20GB or 60GB HDDs. Madness. Hardly anybody has, or can afford, the Elite. So there goes the success rate.

It won't be successful here at all, but overseas I can see it taking off for sure. Buying a larger hard drive and a 360 would in many cases work out to cheaper than buying a PS3.

IF you remove your BLINKERS WAldo then u would Know that TOMB RAIDER ANNIVERSARY was LAUNCHED ON XBL first (which was long before sony even thought of doing something like that) THEN in the REtail channels Afterwards ! AND TRA is an XBox 360 title BTW which = Full 360 title available for Download !

The game is a retelling of the first Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider Anniversary was released for PSP, PS2, Wii,[15] and Windows platforms. The PS2 and PC versions were released on 1 June 2007 in Europe, and in the USA on 5 June 2007. The PSP version was released in June, the Xbox 360 version was released in October and the Wii version was released 14 November. The Xbox 360 version of the videogame was made available for download from the Xbox Live Marketplace in November 2007, However, the game was also released later on disc to retailers, just like all of the other versions.

you've just been owned ! GET REAL Facts First Next time OK !

Hell dude, are you normal?! Your grammar is horrible, your 'attitude' needs work. What's up with 'You've just been owned'?

Anyway, so what? One title, that wouldn't even be worth downloading. Plus, who cares if MS does it because it will fail anyway for three reasons.

1) SA residents can't pay in Rands, thus it'll be pretty expensive. 2) Internet isn't exactly the cheapest in SA. 3) How are you gonna get a whole game library onto a 20GB HDD and the Arcade doesn't even provide any HDD.

It will be a helluva failure. Sony at least provided their customers with an HDD in EVERY PS3, as well as provided currency support worldwide. MS would probably block SA anyway as we don't have servers and are not recognized as an official LIVE country.

Now take your blinkers off. PS3 is more advanced and more expensive (aimed at mature gamers, which you are clearly not!).

Don't you see what I've been trying to tell you? They've put a hard drive in every PS3 - correct. But people are paying for that hard drive. Microsoft gave people the option of buying a console with a hard drive or one without it. Chances are that those who bought the Core/Arcade never meant to use it for anything such as downloading in the first place, and those who bought the Elite bought it in full knowledge that it has a larger hard drive and as a result would suit their needs more. Microsoft are simply catering to more people.

Dont waste ur energy on this guy Lydon ! He'll never get it ;) !

why isnt it worth downloading ! oh i forgot cause U'v been proven WRONG thats WHY !!!!!!

The PS3 also launched with 20gig HDD's IF u DIDnt know that which I know u Dont ! Secondly All current pro 360's are shipped with 60 Gig drives which is more than adequate enough to store a few games ! If u are smart enough then u would have known that microsoft point vouchers are available Locally and u pay for that with RANDS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh nd u still need the internet to download stuff from PSN since ur bantering that internet isnt cheap in sa

Atleast MS is making a profit on their consoles unlike Sony !!!!

More advanced according to you, yet almost every multi platform title looks better on the 360 ! and ur Respond will be Killzone 2 bla bla bla rite !!!!!

Thanks for your other post Dohc-WP to confirm - I thought I heard they were distributing games through XBox Live.
They should maybe get this more off the ground to compete with Sony's PSN, which everyone is raving about.

PSN may have many users, but their profits from it pale in comparison to Xbox Live's. I saw some figures recently. It's actually pretty funny.

The psn user figures are really skewed because anyone can create a psn account if they have internet access on their pc.

I think we have a fan boy in our presence:D

Im not gonna bother getting in fight with you.
Both consoles have positives and negatives, but sony is definitly not crushing Microsoft;)
As far as I know Sony loses a huge amount of money on every single ps3 they produce. Im sorry but that's a fail. If a company wishes to get ahead of the rest they should maybe try and produce a console that makes them money!!!!

Microsoft managed to produce a cracking machine that actually made them money, yes its not always been reliable but that problem is slowely but surely being corrected!!

At the moment prices for both consoles are pretty high but there are rumors going around that the X360 will get a much needed price drop in the near future!!

Both consoles have their fair share of awsome titles, but unfortunatly for ps3..most of their much anticipated games are launching on xbox360 aswell..Tekken 6 ect. Tekken was supposed to be sony's main fighting title and now its come over to the awsome side aswell.

You don't see Gears of war 2 launching for Ps3!!
Oh and killzone 2 isn't worth a 5/5 or 10/10 or 90% rating.
It can't compete against Gears 2!!

Don't bother debating this with me as im the most stubborn person alive..Oh and I mite just end up putting a smile on your face:D

Oh I own both consoles.
I love both consoles.
I don't like Ps3 fan boys though!!
