Best MMO to get me into the genre

I'm still downloading the patches:mad:

One update was 2.6 gigs and it was not locally hosted, I will let you all know as soon as I've finished downloading. Should be finished late Friday afternoon. At least I'll have the entire weekend to test it out.

Patch sizes can get crazy after a while. I had to download all of EQ2 at one point and that was crazy...

Best to jump in as a game / expansion releases, but even then they are like 1gig patches in the first week of a games life >_<;

But good luck in WoW. My best advice is to pick 2 gathering professions initially and sell for profit on Auction House. I used to always go for mining and skinning (mining and herbalism if you don't mind toggling tracking skills for them). Trust me, you will make more profit by doing this than by any items you can make with a craft initially.

Then look for a friendly guild run by consistent mature people (kind of hard in WoW).

It has been a bit a crazy too, at least from now on its a lot easier to keep it updated. A one gig update at this stage sounds like a breeze :)

I will do that, I've started reading the beginner guides to get a better understanding of the game, getting quite excited just reading the notes.

LOL, I've heard as much about the community, will keep an eye out.

Well, I would have suggested Guild Wars and Eve Online.
Guild Wars have 14-day trials iirc and I can help you with a 21-day buddy trial for Eve.

Most of the games have patches locally hosted (Eve too), except for Guild Wars you won't get any. I am sure we can get a local fully updated gw.dat file somewhere though...

Eve is P2P and GW is F2P and both Eve and Guild Wars are prettier than WoW. ;)
Eve has a steep learning curve and GW is easy-going, and won't take hours to accomplish something.

But enjoy WoW, hope you like it :)

GW and Eve online would be my second and third choice, but for now I'm taking it one MMO at a time :)
Thanks for the offer, I might just take you up on it some time soon.

Will look into it, I'm sure it wont be too difficult to find or download.

IF that is the case then i might get into GW a little sooner than I thought.

Thank you, 11 millions players cant be wrong...ermm:D

Your first MMO experience is usually your best.

I envy you ^_^

After becoming a fan of the genre, you will hop from MMO to MMO trying to rekindle that initial feeling... But sadly it never happens.

You guys are so negative.

Plus, I don't believe it is true.

I have not had such a 'problem'... granted, simply the excitement of being part of something that is world-wide with millions of other people, it is a great feeling and awesome experience, but saying you cannot experience that ever again is BS.
It is what YOU make of it.

I get what you are saying tehnihilist, its like most things in life, your first experience is always the most memorable, I remember the first time I went surfing and the first time I played an FPS game online. I take it that this applies to MMO's as well, I will probably be comparing every MMO I play in future with WOW.

I managed to get a couple of hours in this evening, I thought I had played for 20 minutes but it turned out that it was more like 2 hours LOL. It was great fun, I am officially a MMO fan.

Good to hear Sockmonkey!

Comparing different kinds of MMO's and your experiences of them, directly with each other would be a mistake, since it is often not like-for-like (some are, but not all)... and most experienced MMO-ers I know agree with that.

Comparing first experiences of GW, EVE and Tabula Rasa would be an example of what I am talking about.

I think it is the Massively Multiplayer part that strikes the first time player, and the sheer scope and time one can put into the game, and not the sub-genre aspects.

Across the board that is standard in the genre, and it is that which one grows accustomed to. You can never really feel the same excitement / revelation again.

Now I understand all people are different, but perhaps it is a symptom of this age or whatever, that we seldom, if ever, see everything in a fresh and rose-tinted view each time we encounter something similar in its core basis. Some might, but that is the exception.

Just a warning Sockmonkey - these games can steal your soul! :p
I just restarted EVE and it is killing my free time and taking up space where I should be doing other 'important' things. :D

I also started with Guild Wars. Good because it is free to play on a regular basis. WoW is ok and draws the bigger crowd. I've settled on Lord of the Rings Online now. Very involved gameplay and if you enjoyed the books and the movies and a Middle Earth adventure is what you seek then I would recommend it.

Yeah WoW is a good place to start if you are willing to Pay to Play(P2P) regardless of what I and others think of the game.

If you are lacking funding Guild Wars is a good idea. And if you want a Spaceship Scifi based game, then EVE Online is great.

Then I'm the odd one out. My first MMO was Guild Wars, and only after that I went on to WoW. I've tried replaying GW a couple of times but I just can't get into it.

im also looking to get into MMO, i think ill go with World of Warcraft

One big thing to consider is the amount of patches that you will need to download or preferably get from a friend or fellow forum member. The patches alone are about 5 gigs at the moment with more big patches still on the way.

I've thoroughly enjoyed WOW so far, I'm looking forward to playing some others, but its going to take a lot to beat WOW.

Firstly I used the word "usually" in my statement, and personally, though I will get a fight for this statement, I find GW to be a MMO-Lite. All that instancing and lack of meaningful progression gets to me. But a great game nonetheless considering.

*Note - To the GW fans on this site, pleeeeease I don't want an argument on the merits on GW compared to my statements. They are just my opinion.*

My first MMO experience was Entropia Universe, but that had a real-world currency system, and I never deposited, so I was always poor :D

Then came Guild Wars and it blew away my expectations. Nothing has topped that since. The only thing that came close was WoW. I had an awesome honeymoon experience with WoW, and it has provided hundreds of hours of entertainment over the years.

But Guild Wars will always be my first love. It's one of, if not the only game whose defense I automatically jump to :P

Anyway, I'm sure you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of WoW. The trick is to take it slowly and not to rush anything. Read the quest text etc. It spoils the game when you just skip over everything and rush to max level :)
