MWEB "exclusive server hosts" for CoD: Black Ops

I replied to the thread on the WA forums, but like I said in my thread, if WA peer with MWEB it means that it will somehow reduce costs, which in turn means they'll make less money, which in turn means that WA will vomit at the very mention of the idea.

Well they will lose more money due to routing internationally and clients canceling accounts.

Reply from Rob a game server admin at WebAfrica:

I think plans are still up in the air over at WA about Black Ops. I have heard that WA has plans to peer with Mweb.

I will ask one of the WA okes to enlighten us on this subject as I don't know much about this.

I'm not really unhappy with them but I'm a bit tired of always being behind everyone else because I'm one of their customers. Lots of people got decreases in their monthly internet fees and only MONTHS later did WA make some sort of effort, and even then it was a very small effort. Now MWEB has done something revolutionary AND listened to gamers and succeeded in getting Black Ops servers, but how long will it once again take WA to respond? Months? Maybe even never? I'm tired of pulling the short straws simply because I'm a loyal client of theirs. I want to see some of that same loyalty coming back to me!

Well apparently WebAfrica replied in another thread stating that they are peered with MWEB, but someone else then replied with a traceroute between www.wage.co.za and MWEB and it went all over a whole bunch of international routes. It was flippen hilarious.

Edit:

Everyone seems to think that MWEB is doing everyone in South Africa a massive favor with their Peering stunt and getting CoD Black Ops servers. Well think about this; they made an "exclusive" deal to get the CoD Black Ops servers in the country, thereby stopping anyone else from obtaining the same service in the country. Then they went ahead with this "bold" move of peering garbage - what happens? You're taking the number one online multiplayer game in South Africa, make it exclusive to yourself, cut ALL ties with other ISPs - thereby forcing all the gamers to move over to your company otherwise they won't be able to play the game.

MWEB shouldn't call this the Black Ops servers - they should call it the Black Mail servers. Because that is what MWEB is doing to SA gamers. Do you really think that MWEB would do something selfless for the gamers of South Africa? LOL - what? Did you think this is some sort of Disney movie?

Wake up man!

To be fair they are not blackmailing gamers, they are black(ops?)mailing the ISP's into their open and free peering plan. They obviously noted the fundamental ass-owning dished out by the COD fanboys, when somebody messed with their server based MW2 gaming, and now hoping that ISP's are privvy to more of the same.

Well played M-Web. Well played. :)

No ways. I think the gamers of SA are sleeping behind the wheel here. It's been said a lot of times that everyone is so "shocked" at the recent "transformation" being done by MWEB where they've turned from thief into "saint". Have you ever heard the saying that a leopard doesn't change it's spots? People are being way too gullible here - what people need to be asking themselves is "what is MWEB gaining out of this whole situation". Once we understand that, we'll be able to see if this is really to our benefit, or to our disgrace.

You're stating "Well played MWEB", but fail to see that they've basically used the South African gaming community and taken hostage the server agreement that ALL gamers in the country was hoping and praying for, so that ISP's could dance to THEIR will. That's not well played at all - in fact it should be seen as an infringement of the competition rules in South Africa. I hope someone takes them to the competition commission over this stunt.

Hey guys,

I can confirm yes, we are peering with Mweb.
Regarding the plans to have COD: Black-Ops, we've been working on this for a few months and are still continuing to work on something to offer WAGE COD:7 servers.

I still have my doubts about this. He stated that they are peering with MWEB, indeed they are via their IS-based account, but all of their other accounts use SAIX, which will NOT be peered with MWEB come next week.

Firstly... so obviously you feel quite strongly about this, Neo. :P Seriously though, I think you are taking this a bit personally, but damn sure M-Web is no saint.

Secondly... I don't like or endorse their "hardball" methods, but I still think it is well played. In fact, last night I was quite f*cked off at them, when their peer switching borked my PSN for a couple of hours (I am on M-Web ADSL BTW). M-Web are certainly looking out for their own pockets with the free peering issue (that is what they're gaining, BTW - cost reduction), but the consumer pockets are hit by the same issue, so everyone wins, in the long run. Or at least - that's the pipe dream. We'll need to see if it pans out. :| In the same breath, blaming M-Web for MTN, Voda and Telkom's determined effort at profiteering, is somewhat disingenuous.

Thirdly... "Exclusive supply" business arrangements are quite commonplace. It's called a competitive edge. Surely Core Group will be at the CC long before M-Web ever is (again?). :P

i don't think it matters... your data goes from your place to WA's servers where it's routed direct to mweb. I'm not an expert on this sort of stuff, just what I understood from certain posts on MyBB dealing with the relationship between Hetzner and mweb.

Also, Mweb are being pretty saintly for a business - they are pushing through a much needed overhaul of the way business is done in SA. Of course this will benefot their bottom line, but isn't that what competition is all about?

I just gave the counter argument - I usually don't understand the things I type lol - let's see what happens!

Ah... you're one of those that is always against the majority. Well... that's always handy, especially on a forum. Keep the debates going and all that...
