Shopping for a new graphics card

I guess it depends what you play. Tetris will OWN! lol.

The 5750 is probably your best bet here for R1000. That coming from someone who currently thinks nvidia are better. The value for money on the 5750 is drastically better than the below gtx450 (which is around R1.2k and is better than the 5750)

The best with a stretch of budget would be the 550Ti for 1.5k

Shadowfox, I'm in the same boat as you with my current 8600GT which I bought back in '07. I'm also not keen to fork out much more than R1k, so I'll keep a close eye on this thread. thanks!

The last time i did research on what to upgrade to the HD4890's were going for R1.8k, I'm assuming it's safe to say they are no longer contenders for decently priced and specced cards...

You really are fond of the 460's?
Maybe you can tell me then, are the sparkle versions of the 460 any good. Saw them in the shops for R1599 each a couple weeks ago.

Sparkle make good cards. They're usually faster than most other brands although they are not as well supported.

I may have to borrow money.

When it comes to price/value you can bet your best pair of socks that you'll usually be shopping in the R1,2k - R2k range ...

The GTX460's are probably the best cards i have had for the price and performance. They are awesome. See if you can get the 1GB version. I still use a GTX460 for dedicated physx even if it does not help all that much.

I'd go for the gtx460, just wait a month or two or as yoh said borrow some money! Don't shoot yourself in the foot because you were impulsive or impatient! Trust me it took me a while and a few bucks later to realize that!

Read the thread from the beginning and you can have a idea maybe?

Yeah I'm just so lus to do that...ok hold on.

Right so budget budget budget... Well I get what you're saying about cheaper cards being able to run games. I have played Starcraft2 on my onboard 8300gpu and had a pretty good experience of it. So you have to respect your price bracket. I'm going to recommend a 5670, check out Esquire they have pretty good deals on those cards. Ok I know you said Nvidia............ but there isn't anything in your price bracket. Maybe a gt240? I just threw up in my mouth a little. I can't go on...

No, no just bite the bullet, register on carbonite and find yourself a 2ndhand gts250 1gb or gtx260 for the r6-900 region and you'll be laughing mate.

I would agree wtih Jasong..... There is a time where it comes to value for money, and right now if the person is looking for nvidia, i would commend at least the gtx550 which is 1.3k, rather save those few lunches and going out with friends, R400 bucks and put it towards the card....
cuz i mean for cards that are in the R600-R900 region, u gonna say to yourself okay spend 100 bucks more to get 20 % better performance, and spend another 200 bucks more to get 30 % better performance ect...
If your getting a card in the 1k-1.5k range, there i would say would be value for money marker.

Fully agree with that.

Always look for a card with best bang for your buck and one thats most future proof.
