PS3 jailbreaker arrested in Johannesburg - world first

Good for catching a criminal , now I would like to see what the justice system does..
They let taxi drivers go out on bail after driving over a kid ,
what grounds other than theft , can they possibly have to hold him ?

ive contact safact about a south afrcan website selling pirated pc games ,
they did exactly this = nothing.
The website is still up selling pirated pc games at R80 a game.
The site has been up for almost 10 years now , ive contacted safact 3 times already ,
also contacted megarom , nothing happens to the site.

Some serious loop holes out there ..

<snip>

We all know that system is kak to put it lightly. In that regard I would love to see a proper overhaul of it and the cops. Don't think that's too high on banana republic's list of priorities...

This should happen more often.
I know of a few people advertising in the junkmail who sell pirated XBOX games and even offer a service to jailbrake a console for a fee.
Funny how you see this stuff happening all the time and nothing gets done about it.

Ja I know what he did is wrong, but seriously, have we not got bigger crime problems then Sony losing a few bucks? maybe a few hundred rape, murder and hijacking cases? We can give a damn about 1st world crimes when we have 3rd world crime down to acceptable levels...

I can agree with you to some degree - but a crime is a crime - no matter how small or big. And this particular bust highlights the problem with jailbreaking - and contradicts the arguments of the jail-breakers regarding the use of their consoles for ... I dunno ... research purposes.

Also ... I reckon it's easier to arrest a geek surrounded by computers than it is to arrest someone who might be packing some firepower :p All crime needs to be tackled - can't ignore one just because it's "less" serious.

Nice to see that SAPS can actually do something right, other than shooting each other in police stations...

That's good news. Put the ****** behind bars and keep him there for a while. Now if only they can do the same for all these chops flashing Xboxes. They are all over the show.

EDIT:

You get +1 reputation for that. You can't be more harsh on some crimes than on others. EVERYTHING needs to be tackled.

Wow as awesome a job as the Cops have done , and yay for Ster kinekor ,
And don't get me wrong im not all for pirates and stuff (but unlike most of you I will admit to having downloaded a errrrmmm movie or 2 with MY UNCAPPED lines that is supposedly only used for errrrrmmmm you tube) my proportion of purchases to
ERRRRMM DIGITAL CLONES OF LEGITIMATE COPIES is at least 10 to 2 with 10 being my Purchases

so that out of the way , there is a reason why this is a world first , and honestly although it's being billed as a Playstation Bust , they will probably get him only on the copy of Windows 7 that he was running.
On the PS thing not a chance , they are still debating wither the Console is your property or SONY's if it is yours then you may do what you want with it , and let's see I forked out R4000.00 for the thing so I am of the impression its mine .
The circumventing "units" are like some one said above not solely for the circumvention of DRM and is very hard to prove other wise .
The PS2 stuff and others not so sure he will get away with that , but with a good lawyer he can make a case point is
worst case he will pay a fine , no not really a steep fine as you might think

Why I say this what is my ultimate point , my point is that It was a awesome sting operation , they even got techies to come check out the work ,computers , surveillance, overtime ,snack's
It comes down to numbers , to me at this point with no absolute legislation on how to deal with Digital rights infringements
where Sony has not made there point yet , or case for that matter

This guy will get out of jail for less that 50 000 , which I guarantee is more than the value of the man hours plus extra (im a IT person my rate is R1200.00 hr) consultant hours

All crime is crime , but was viable , I hope this is not why I am paying taxes.

Good to see something happing with pirates, but venom makes a decent argument that is it worth it, maybe if they get a few more people then this will get more serious.

Isnt the fine for running an illegal copy of windows pretty high as well?

This is actually BS.

If I buy a car stock standard, it's my bloody choice what I choose to do with it. If I want to soup it up and mod it, do you see VW/GM et all busting my door down and arresting me? NO.

Same thing applies, if I buy a PS3, it's my bloody PS3. I can choose what I want to do with it.

True they dont arrest you they void your warranty, and the police arrest you for illegal racing mods and street racing and on some instance noise pollution if you exceed the decibel range for your motor or exhaust.

As for the PS3 well mod it all you want provided you do not cause copyright infringement on 1st to 3rd parties, such as copying games or playing illegally downloaded games cause that is still a crime around the world And bypassing a security feature is also a crime. Its considered as hacking, and well hacking is a no go also.

These people weren't arrested for private modding/piracy but for commercial use.

There is no excusing commercialised piracy.

problem is you can do anything with the hardware. but nothing to the software you dont own it. You only have a licence tp use the software. or this is how i understand what the problem is
