Abuse of The News Comments

Can I ask a giant favor, please? COuld you perhaps remove the comments posted under my name in these two articles? Friends of mine from other gaming sites post on the articles, and unfortunately they don't know it's not me posting there, so they think I've turned into a total asshole. These two links have people in them who actually know me:

http://mygaming.co.za/news/news/13086-Epic-admits-Bulletstorm-didnt-turn-profit.html#comments

Haha!! Shame Graal, I just saw that :(! I don't understand why people do this...

I would also like to say that I am in now ways GamerDuke who posted in that article as well, just in case people think Duke and Duke are one in the same :p...

Somebody on MyBB actually registered my nick and is trolling their comments sections as well. :(

There goes what little credibility I had left amongst most of the south african gaming community. This just tells me it's someone who is purposely trolling either me or a number of people. Obviously has some kind of grudge or vendetta going on.

Is there a possiblity we can reserve nicks for the new comment login system, because this person is probably going to register ours before we can do so ourselves.

Just talk to uncle rpm quite sure he'll sort out the imposter over at myb.

I sent him a PM, but I'm not sure he can do anything about it. There isn't technically a rule that says you're not allowed to use a forum member's nick on the MyBB site.

The biggest gripe is that loads of people online know me personally, and they know me by my nick, Graal. Seeing as they don't always know it's not me posting the comments, this is quite damaging to my online presence. I'm going to try and see if I can't do some freelance journalism for some of the local gaming news sites next year, and if people associate me with being an asshole because of this troll, that's not going to happen. What's even worse is that this could potentially have far-reaching consequences, as I'm planning on perhaps doing journalism as a job someday, and I'd really need the experience.

lol... I see there's a "Lycanthrope" there too.

Pff... He needs to work on his impersonation.

Graal maybe if this goes on you should go see a lawyer. And take him/her to court for Id theft.

Lol, they'd probably laugh and throw it out as soon as they hear it's about a forum nickname. :P Haven't received a response from RPM yet, so not sure what's going on. While it might seem menial, people really do know me by that name, because even my Twitter account has my real name below it and uses the same profile pic as my Facebook account, and I've met with a lot of people I've met online in person before.

I think you're making a big deal about nothing, the fact that you think your online username on the internet will be harmful to you is a problem in itself.

When you get out there into the real world looking for a job, people will judge you on the interview you give, and citing "identity theft" will just make you look like a person who's trying to cover up with excuses. Bottom line, the online world is online, you're foolish to think that it will affect you in the real world.

Do you think authors on this site like Tarryn van der Byl are affected by the comments of other users? No, she just gets out there and does her business, which is why she is so affluent in the gaming scene in SA having written for NAG and this site.

So if you wanna be successful, you have to be good at what you want to do. Not find excuses for why aren't making it.

Nice job on missing the entire point of the post, though. I'm not talking about going out into the 'real world'. I'm talking about finding an online on-the-side journalism job sometime. If you look at my post, though, you'd see I'm not covering up my failures, because I did say I'm too busy right now, meaning I haven't started looking around yet. I can't have 'failed' if I haven't even given it a shot yet. Either way, it probably won't affect my chances of getting a job, because even though the majority of people I know online know me by the forum nick Graal (a nick that I haven't seen used a lot on the internet so far), it's going to be the article they request me to write as an 'interview' that determines whether I get a job or not. So you've got a point there, even though you missed the entire point of my post.

If you have any hope of getting into the journalism world, I suggest you stop writing with such attitude, it's good to have attitude, if people can see the cynicism and wit behind it all, but if you carry on the way you do, your articles will be unpleasant to read.

When you do get time, then check out eGamer.co.za, they have openings for people wanting to start out in game journalism, I have a friend and he's quite a self-centred know it all (in reality he's a really not very popular at all, in reality he's just a stereotypical computer geek fattie with glasses who gets really depressed because he cannot be with a girl who he desperately wants. Rajman you funny lad.), and you aren't half as self-absorbed as he is (from what I can tell) so I'm sure you shouldn't have a hassle getting an internship

Oh, don't get it wrong. I'm probably every bit as much a prat as he is, I just tend to hide it slightly better. :P

Forces you to log in using your facebook, twitter and similar social networking details to comment. As far as I know, the option for anonymity is still there, but it will certainly eliminate the imposters in that those of us being imitated on the site can just post using our real details and peoplewould immediately know when the imposter posts as us.

What is Disqus? How does it work?
Head over to techcentral to see an implementation of it. You register an account using your email or one of the major authentication methods and can then comment on any site using it. I don't know if you can comment anonymously, probably if the site moderator allows it. I was even able to claim all my other comments that I made with the same email addy.

Will cut down tremendously on the reputationless troll posts as you can then follow where someone is commenting.

Ignore for now. Endless problems from Disqus users and all the posts I made using it just went poof though it shows them when I make them. Funny it was ready to claim the 40 posts I made previously and they are still there, but it's like I don't exist when I should be listed with the second most posts.

Depends on how you implement it I suppose. I'm using it on my WP based blog and it's a dream for me - it's almost completely eliminated the spam I've been having to deal with (2 spam posts in a month compared to the 50 - 80 dailies). It also uses my own comment database, so even if Disqus does decide to die at some point all the comments aren't lost.

Can you guys set up the login system in a way that if someone tries to register a nick that is already registered on the forums, he has to enter the password for the corresponding forum profile? I know it's a lot of extra work, but it will certainly nip the troll problem in the bud. The trolls are probably going to jump to nab our nicks before we get a chance to register them for ourselves, and then the trolling is just going to go on in full earnest.
