DOTA2 ingame leaked screenshots.

oh, my! it's beautiful :'). it has that sexy, high-fidelity, illustrated look that D3 is sporting.

I hope the character portraits are animated ala modern Blizzard games.

Lol, did you see the comments in the forum post. DOTA players really are toxic.

Personally I think it looks like LoL with DOTA style play. Which is great. What else would you want this to be. To be honest I find the graphics of HoN to sumtimes be a little hard to follow in intense battles. (abit too dynamic)

Yeah those players are a lost cause, never happy with anything. Heck one even complained about choosing heroes before the game start instead of using the taverns. Looks like DOTA2 won't unite the playerbase afterall.

Why they are reacting like this is beyond me. It was the same when I played Call of Duty 2 and Modern Warfare was released.

The players complaining are probably the die-hard DotA players that started playing when the mod was released and were there throughout DotA's "evolution".

People will play what they want to play.

I am currently becoming a big fan of HoN especially seeing as they went FTP.

This looks good though, I may give this a bash!

What I don't understand is why are people happy with clones? Why are people cloning DOTA instead of taking the ideas and evolving them. That comparison shot of the 4 games is absolutely telling the fact that you have the EXACT same terrain across all the games.

I just think there is so much more you can do with the general concept beyond just replicating the original with better graphics. Look at tower defence games, the core gameplay is always there BUT the good games have their own flavour and feel. I hope DOTA2 is more than just a clone and I hope they have more than the one map and game mode and not just the same 3 lanes, 5 heroes, 3 towers per lane, river in the middle gameplay that everyone else has.

The whole idea of DOTA2 is to turn DotA (a mod) into a standalone game on a new engine free of the limitations war3 placed on it to not only satisfy a hardcore fanbase of 15 million+ players, but also make it possible to introduce new players into the genre. Everyone always plays the same map over and over again anyways, HoN tried making a few alternatives but they not getting much playtime.

That's the same Mantra used by every DOTA clone. This one just has DOTA in the name because Valve was the first developer to try and patent the name not because it has any more of a connection to the original.

I just hold Valve to a higher standard than the rest, so we'll see how it turns out.

Icefrog said it himself, his main priority was to get DOTA2 on a new engine, well that's exactly what he did with Valve. So THE author of DotA who made DotA an e-sport is still working alongside Valve. Something that did not happen with Cstrike Source, in fact many people don't even know who made the mod.

IceFrog is not THE author of DOTA.

DOTA was created by one person and DOTA-allstars another. IceFrog only took over maintenance/development on DOTA after version 6. Not to discount his contribution which I'm sure is significant but it's one thing to polish someone else's ideas and it's something else to come up with your own.

Before him was Guinso, Guinso who is responsible for LoL did two things major things in DotA:

*He created the recipe system.
*Then he ported(stole?) heroes from all the other AoS maps hence All Stars.

That's it, the word "balance" did not even exist at the time, and eul's version was still being played because people especially the Koreans refused to play Guinso's version. He kinda left it in mess, that's where Icefrog came in. It's because of him that the DotA genre is taking off, S2 created HoN because of Icefrog, not because of Guinso.

Let's take a parallel from the development of FPS games. For me people are still making Doom clones, I want someone to make Half-Life. :)

Those were my first thoughts as well. It looks like LoL. LoL, though, pulls the cartoony look off better, but then again, these are probably early screenshots and nothing can substitute the original DotA gameplay. I was expecting a little more, though.

I completely agree. Which is why I think LoL is fantastic and will play a pivotal role in the evolution of the genre onwards. LoL is based off DotA, but unlike HoN, very few champions are actually very alike DotA heroes. LoL also implemented a 3vs3 map, and will soon release Dominion, completely different game mode. I must sound like a fanboy, but I really think the team behind LoL has done a great job thus far, even though I've stopped playing LoL because it does not grip me as much as DotA did.

I would have liked to see some innovations from Dota2, but so far it's only been the same old.
