Windows 8 Boots Up in Eight Seconds

Microsoft's upcoming iteration of Windows offers a myriad of new features, but one of the most notable is an extremely fast boot up time.

The following video, released on the Building Windows 8 blog, shows Windows 8 booting up from a completely cold start – that is, coming from a battery removal – in about eight seconds; quite an impressive feat for an OS that utilizes both a Microsoft Metro UI in addition to running a full, Windows 7-style, operating system.

The technology behind the boot up speeds is not unlike the kind used when placing your computer in hibernation mode, although instead of saving all of the information to quickly bring up all of your apps, the initial Windows 8 boot up retrieves just the required data to bring forth the OS.

Keep in mind, this likely won't be typical behavior for all machines that have Windows 8 loaded. You can bet your allowance that the laptop used in the video is optimized quite nicely for the sake of a picture perfect demonstration.

It cool and all, but I barely ever shut down my pc. I would rather they just make it less memory intensive :)

But maybe the quick boot time is a result of better coding we will see.

Hmmm I don't think it's heavy specs. Windows 8 is aiming to be a mainstream system. so they will try to use mid range specs to get those results. It's more a matter of them optimising the kernel itself to start up quicker, a better written, cleaner algorithm.

I know linux usually starts up pretty quickly even after 6 months of use on my laptop (my main coding platform atm) it's pretty much held up quite well and still maintains that fresh startup speed that comes with a fresh install. But still quite interesting to see that MS is still keeping with the perfomance side of things.

Wow... thats quite fast. On my pc, with a maybe 6 month old install, it boots up in about 15seconds I think. and that is from after bios etc. like from when it starts loading actual windows. I miss my old motherboards 5 seconds to boot up to a built in linux that I could just quickly surf the web etc. I never used it because my pc is almost never switched off, but still...

Oh my dear god. Just watched the video (after waiting for it to load O.o) and that is quicker than even my built in bootup was on my old motherboard. Well done Microsoft. Can't wait to see what this OS will turn out like when its actually on my pc :D

Yeah, my Windows 7 boots up in about 30 seconds, but it's another 3 minutes before I can actually use it for anything. Not that impressive imo.

Well, I suppose it was the logical next step since the Windows 7 startup is a major improvement over previous versions. They do say that
the initial Windows 8 boot up retrieves just the required data to bring forth the OS
... I wonder if the system will then be "ready to work" or is it initially going to be slower. That is of course if they don't have a SSD installed in the laptop.

My PC, since I installed the SSD, starts up (from cold) in approx. 20-25 seconds, of which at least 10 seconds of that is going through the bios.

Lol true. If they can make the desktop usuable in 8 seconds I'll never call them names that must not be mentioned ever again if I reformat (well then again if it doesn't need a clean install every year that will be a massive save)

Awesome! I'm holding out on purchasing another laptop next year til Windows 8 arrives. Just need to keep my 5 year old one chugging along til then...

That is impressive to say the least for a Microsoft OS. But starting up quick is one thing, a valid point was made how long till you can actually use a program my current PC, boot relative fast into windows but i have to wait 30seconds before i can do anything heavy duty or it will react like a snail.

Just installed Windows 8 Developer 64bit here on the testing pc at work.

Pc is rather low specced as its just used for testing.
Core 2 Duo 7400
4GB Ram
Geforce 8400GS
250GB Sata 2 drive

From Cold Boot till password promt takes just over 13 seconds.
Bear in mind no programs or anything are loaded, just the OS, chipset and Video Drivers (win7 drivers used)

my laptop is also about that age, funny thing is i am running a dual boot on it and windows 7 loads waay faster than XP (it came with vista  so i probably shouldnt moan)

Wow, was that even 8 seconds to bootup? Impressive :) What I'd like as a feature would be to restart the machine and open up everything that I had open before clicking Restart! Anything like this out there or in the pipeline?
