Unfortunately yes. It looks to be the Romanian players like fivel said. They (or are they all the same person?) start tons of challenges with 1 day to move and no timebank and then claim timeout victories when people don't move in time. Your best bet is to either decline challenges from them or to delete the current challenges and then challenge them with proper time settings.

Thanks for the headsup. I will remember this for future challenges. Its a pity, cause my stats losses show 2 more lost games and that is a poor reflection

Like solitude said, he is kinder than I am, I just delete the new games that come through, as I'm finding that my small chess brain and confidence is taking a severe beating. Out of the last 12 games I've finished, I've lost 10, mostly against the Romanians, it just isn't fun anymore.

I also note a very strange thing. On most occasions when I make a move they suddenly all are online. How is this possible?

speedz, I can understand you feeling unhappy for losing in this way. Still, Daniel was quite within his rights to claim the victory as you were fully aware of the game; after all you made moves in both games. You had every opportunity to check out the time limits. The fact is that you made a painful mistake by not getting it right.

I suggest that you think carefully about what went wrong, and make a plan not to let it happen again. Solitude's idea of not accepting zero time bank games has merit. Putting yourself on vacation when playing zero timebank games also helps. Or maybe something else.

Just keep on enjoying the chess.
 
Tallfred, I agree with you to a certain extent, BUT all these Romanian players set a 1 day time limit, so if you are not careful about managing your vacation setting you will end up losing many of these games. IMO they do this deliberately to catch players out and that goes against the very objective of the site. I have tried to communicate with all 3, with no success.

You don't have to accept a challenge, so use the "Delete Game" option if you don't like the player or the time limit. Nobody can catch you out if you are careful: speedz admits that he knew about the games. While we're at it, make sure that "Receive email notification when challenged" is set in your profile.

Oh yeah, and have a fantastic blunder-free 2012!

Yes he had every right to do so. I still feel it is a shallow victory, a victory none the less. I for one would only claim a timeout victory if the other person took an exceptionally long time to make a move, despite having a timebank. Its not as if he had no other games to play at that point in time (he was playing 31 games at the time concurrently).

Also not an excuse, but as Fivel pointed out, it seemed as if they were online all the time to make their move immediately. I myself log on once a day and somedays im just to busy. I am now aware that I should log on all the time and wont be caught off-guard like I was.

I have also been wondering about this. It could be that they wrote a tiny application that automatically visits the website addresses of their own games, and then alerts them when a move has been made. But this is just speculation.

I don't know about you guys but I was on holiday for a week. Yesterday was my first day back at work and I'm pooped. Last night I was so tired but went ahead and quickly made some moves at ChessConquest. What a big mistake! :(

Mistakes happen. Just keep positive. Players have come back from big disadvantages to win. There are some very interesting ideas at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swindle_(chess) on how to take a lost game and get something out of it.
 
It looks like Ramsaychess' holiday time ran out. Is it possible to maybe give him some more time? Two of the tournament games I was playing against him were automatically claimed which is unfortunate and it would have been better to finish the games.

Ramsay always made use of the function over weekends which is why his time ran out. Don't think it is appropriate to make an exception though.

I'm inclined to agree with Fivel on this one. If a player knows he/she cannot make moves over the weekend, they should only enter Medium Velocity and/or Epic Deep Thought tournaments.

Hey and good news! I got Fritz 13 working! It's got an analyze feature where it analyzes games that you play. Will see if I can post an example later. It's a pretty complicated program. :D
