Playstation 4 codename Orbis - could it be?

So it seems that 2013 will be our next gen console release year.

How much are screens with that resolution going to cost?

Why should it be backwards compatible??? FFS, it's a new console, now they have to build in some crap to support old titles. Keep you PS3 if you want to play those games.

It's like saying give us the latest best car, but it should still be able to drive on train tracks like we did three generations ago...

Or wanting the latest best server and OS but still supporting PHP4...

IF this is the case - with all this new PSFourbis talk - backwards compatibility would go a long way to negate the inevitable flurry of SUPER XTREME HD COLLECTIONS that will undoubtedly come around.

If the PS3 was backwards compatible, all the current HD 'remasterings' would be redundant - at least for me. You could argue that buying the HD collections is a stupid thing to do in the first place, and indeed, through the mere act one encourages the trend - but hey, I like my old PS2 games.

For some it will matter more than others.

The fact is that a website targeting the PHP4 framework will still run on a PHP5.4 server platform.

Should you have to recode the entire website just to run on a new server environment? That would be retarded.

Backwards compatibility.
Because some games are about the memories they made and the game-play.
Why must I re purchase the game in a HD remake if the original is just as good.

The PS2 was the first console that maintained backwards compatibility with a previous generation system. Before that such things were unheard of. I think it ridiculous to expect each successive console release to play the previous generations games. Just keep your PS3 if you plan to keep playing PS3 games...

First post of the day: 8:40AM

/Sits back and waits for the inevitable slew of Nerd Rage following the "rumour" that next playstation wont be Backwards compatible, will require always on Internet & won't allow pre-owned game.

Or maybe you should realise that you cannot keep your website on PHP 4 with functions that have been deprecated in PHP5 and is actually 7 years old for ever.

Meh, backwards compatibility doesn't faze me. Rather let devs pump time and money into making more current-gen titles instead of lingering in the past with old tech.

Of course you can. You don't completely rebuild your 10 year old car simply because it doesn't have ABS or whichever safety feature it might be lacking.

Sure, it's not best practice, but not everyone can afford to rebuild their site simply to adhere to new standards. Heck, there's a lot of sites out there still using classic ASP.

Have to agree that the lack of backwards compatibility fazes me less than the online activation DRM and restriction on second-hand sales issues.

Fortunately there are a slew of indie game devs out there who seem content with selling their games at reasonable prices without needing to milk me. I think I'll give them my money instead of playing these so-called "triple-A" titles.

With the original Mass Effect trilogy finished and the release of Diablo 3 around the corner I don't foresee a future need to support a big studio/publisher "whistling:

Grand Theft Auto V :D

This is the very reason I do not own consoles. They are the biggest money making scheme ever and the fanboys just lap it up. Here, buy this overpriced console. Now that we have you, enjoy paying obscene amounts of money on mostly mediocre titles that all mimic each other in some way.

Gaming, even though it is at the height of its popularity with non nerds engaging in casual games / sports titles has become very accessible to the masses but that has brought about the mediocrity I was referring to in my previous paragraph. There are very few titles out there that I enjoy fully and I am one of those gamers that like everything.

I don't blame Sony for the DRM / non pre-played market shutdown, piracy is bad enough as it is and these pre-played sales take away money from the game studios. Which is silly, because that is what produces the mediocre titles because they don't have moolah / projected sales to make up for it.

Consoles actually have a fair amount of brilliant games (games that can be bought for a steal if you're just willing to wait), but you wouldn't know because you are clearly blinded by an irrational disdain for the platform.

My PS3 is a gaming machine, my Blu-Ray player and my media center and all that for an overpriced R2500...

Get out of your PC box and see what else is out there instead of just unfairly bashing a platform you clearly have no clue about.
