PSU went KABOOM! (I think) ???

Hey fellow Nerdonians! :D

It's been a while, but I'm back!

So I was playing on the PC yesterday when all of a sudden I just heard this weird noise and the computer went completely blank. It didn't want to switch on afterwards.

I suspect that it might have been the PSU, it's a fairly new psu but not a very good one.

Can anyone confirm that it might have been the psu and if so can I return it and request a refund or exchange?

Your assistance on the matter, is as always deeply appreciated.

Peace

yeah if it's a half decent PSU the fuse would have burnt out saving the rest of your hardware. here's hoping...

Yip, I am going to take it out tonight and hopefully get syco to have a look at it.

Really hope it's just the psu, else I'm screwed. :(

There was a pop, and a weird smell as well.

I'm also thinking RIP PSU. What can I do to avoid this in future, will a better quality psu be better?

So good ol' syco boy had a look this morning, it's definitely the PSU.

Any recommendations on a psu and surge protector?

Size and price range?

Incredible connection have a surge/lightning protector that includes a R20 000 protection warranty. Can't remember the name though.

Had a 550W, just did the calc on coolermaster's website. Apparently I need a 435W minimum. So anything 450+W.

Price, we are basically giving it as a gift, so not too much. I will prefer as low as possible, but I know I have to get something decent.

I would get a small ups instead of a surge protector, im pretty sure my rig would have had issues by now if not for my ups.
Hear it buzzing and clicking happily every now and then.

Getting a cheap UPS will most probably hurt your PSU more than protect it. It's known fact that the power output from the UPS is not linear, and can damage components.

You mean sine wave. Generally the UPS within easy reach of mygamers will be line interactive, meaning sine wave...except when there is a power failure then it'll switch to square wave or step-approximated sine wave.

Yes square wave sucks for PSUs, but I'm inclined to think that a cheap UPS's ability to catch a power spike / brownout might outweigh the risk posed by the square wave.

Yeah, remembered something like that. I thought though, that even with regular power, the output is square wave?

Those cheapy UPSes surely cannot be line interactive...
