RIFT is going F2P

No trials. No tricks. No traps.
Our free-to-play model is built on a simple idea: everyone can download, log in, and play all of RIFT, free. Starting June 12, new players will have access to all game content – from dungeons and Warfronts to the latest raids – with no level restrictions.

Subscribers enjoy the ultimate RIFT experience.
Subscribers, known as Patrons, receive special bonuses to currency, mount speed, various types of experience, and more!

FAQ

When is RIFT going free-to-play?
June 12 with the arrival of Update 2.3: Empyreal Assault, which also brings a new zone, Chronicle, raid, and more!

Why is RIFT going free-to-play?
Because players prefer free games! Trion has always been progressive with the way we've let people access RIFT, offering trials and referral offers since shortly after launch, Return to Telara events where we invited players to come back for free to see what they missed, partnerships with companies like Raptr, iGames, and others. Over the last two years, we've seen the online gaming market evolve and expand, with millions of new players in North America and Europe embracing free-to-play games. This is just the latest evolution of RIFT that will allow us to bring even more players into the world of Telara.

Why is RIFT going free-to-play now?
Because we believe the game, the market, and players are ready for the transition.

Is there still a subscription? What does it offer?
Yes! Subscribers will be known as Patrons and receive a host of special benefits and abilities:

  • +15% Currency (always on)
  • +10% Mount Speed (always on)
  • Daily Boost Set: Each day you can activate bonuses to the Experience, Notoriety, Favor, Prestige and Tokens you earn while playing.
  • Daily Summons: Instant access to your banker, guild banker, and trainer. You'll receive access to these convenience features on a set cooldown.

I'm currently a subscriber, what will this mean for me?
You'll receive all Patron benefits shown above and experience all the epic fun in RIFT you've come to expect across every character you create.

What do I get with Patron Pass?
Patron Passes give you access to the benefits of a subscription for a set amount of time. They are available for purchase via the in-game RIFT Store in 3, 15, and 30 day durations.

What do I get for purchasing the original RIFT box and the Storm Legion expansion?
Both the RIFT and Storm Legion products grant permanent unlocks to your account. Owning the base game will open extra character and bag slots, while Storm Legion will unlock the expansion Souls (Harbinger, Tempest, Tactician, and Defiler). Check out the table above for details.

How is the game going to be different after the change?
It's not! You can play free or add subscription benefits, but the game itself hasn't changed. Constant development and updates will continue. We're only changing the business model, not the heart of the game or the philosophy behind the game design that makes it so much fun.

Will there be a cash shop?
Yes – clicking the cart icon in the lower UI will open the RIFT Store! Many things will be available for both in-game gold and Credits.

What are Credits?
Credits are a game currency purchased with real money via the RIFT Store or through the Trion Worlds Account Center. Credits can be used to buy many items in RIFT.

What will be available at the RIFT Store?
Mounts, gear, boosts, companion pets, expansion Souls, services, and more.

Can I gift items to my friends?
Yes! When purchasing an item, if it has a gift button next to it, you may choose to gift it to any other player.

How will the Loyalty program work?
We'll be discussing the Loyalty program in detail over the coming weeks.

What is REX?
REX is an item that can be purchased with real money, which can be traded and sold in-game amongst players, and can be exchanged for Credits and Loyalty. We'll be going into more detail about REX in the coming weeks.

What does REX stand for?
RIFT Exchange.

Are you going to change the free-to-play offerings for RIFT in the future?
As with all of the features we add to RIFT, we will continue to make changes to the game based on feedback from our players. It's an ongoing process!

Is it a good game? I tried Old Republic and didn't like it.

Yes Rift is a very good MMO. I've played several MMO's since WoW and Rift was the only one that came close to it. It does a bunch of stuff in a fresh new way which I liked.

I think this is a good move from them, we might actually start playing again now.

Hmmm I'm very tempted to start playing again. Put more than 400 hours when it first came out.

Ditto, but after the fast pace of action combat in GW2 I think I might find it hard to adapt to the old school style that Rift uses... :(

Compared to? Maybe I just haven't experienced enough

I seriously miss WoW PvP and i don't know so much about GW2 PvP actually - have only played a little.. How is RIFT PvP? Would it be worth playing this JUST for PvP?

It was my favourite MMO before GW2 showed its face.

Why has it suddenly gone F2P though?

More than likely it's busy failing. Most MMOs using a subscription model only have a limited lifespan before they have to switch to F2P to become profitable again. You actually have to have a pretty good MMO in order to keep people paying $15 a month.

I don't care. Going to enjoy the next 10-x days they have left while I toss around with my builds :D

Yeah, I'm also going to test this out asap. Actually going to check if I can get the client downloaded before it goes F2P.

Rift is a great game. I really enjoy playing it. I recently installed Raptor and got the Storm Legion expansion for free which means I get the expansion souls when it goes free to play. Also got 2 weeks play time with it.

Like this?

RIFT will be 100% no BS FREE TO PLAY on June 12th! ALL CONTENT! It's all FREE TO PLAY! (Unlike SWTOR where you have to pay subscription to play endgame/pvp)

Here's how you can get in and get RIFT and the Expansion - note that when it's free to play, just for having RIFT + Exp you will unlock bonuses

http://raptr.com/game/Rift/rewards/rift-storm-legion

1. Sign up on http://raptr.com/
2. Sign up for a TRIAL RIFT account and download/install the client: http://www.riftgame.com/en/ - Please note you need to install RIFT before you install raptr
3. Install raptr (AFTER you've installed RIFT - so that way it will register your game)
4. Leave raptr and RIFT on for at least 12 hours.
5. After that your raptr account will see that you are now an "experienced" RIFT player and so you can claim your CD Keys: http://raptr.com/game/Rift/rewards/rift-storm-legion

More rewards for RIFT:

Raptor Pet:

Yep, only I did not have to play the 12 hours - raptr picked up that I played the game previously and had invested around 300 hours in the game.

Yeah, I got one last night. But I dunno. The game plays a lot like WoW. An hour in and every quest in my log consists of 'kill x amount of y' or 'fetch z amount of q.'

I'll see if it grows on me, but right now if I have to play an MMO as close to WoW as this, I'd rather play WoW.
