PS4: SA launch in December, price indicated

Ouch! R6,200 is a lot more than I'd be willing to spend on a console. Guess I'll do the same I did with the PS3 and wait till it's at a more acceptable price range. There's no rush.

Dunno why you guys keep complaining. Most of you have phones costing more.

The phones cost more everywhere, not only in South Africa.
The difference in the PS4's price is Roughly 50% more for South Africa than just about everywhere else in the world.

the difference between the listed and asking price is the concern here. that indicates a rip-off to me.

Yep, I can do the maths, and would also have liked a lower entry price. Just making a comparison with something most people upgrade at least once every two years. Hopefully the console will last longer than that.

Sadly we here in SA are almost always on the short end of the stick with most things hardware related. Shipping and the extra tax on stuff crossing our borders do make an influence on final pricing. Still, about R800 more than I bargained on initially.

i was hoping for much closer to a 10:1 conversion :( so this is way out of my budget for the next year or so... maybe even longer.

I think all of us wouldn't mind that. Welcome to Africa. I'll get one at a later point though, save up a bit. It's still cheaper than the ps3 was at launch. Also, got waaaaay to many games on PS3 I still need to finish.

PS4 --> $399 --> R6299

then how much will the XboxOne cost?

Xbox --> $499 --> ~R7500? :wtf:

In the interest of transparency, I will state upfront that Ster Kinekor is a client of mine, and I am professionally involved in PlayStation South Africa's marketing and PR initiatives. Having said that, the following is my personal take on the situation, and I am not speaking as a PlayStation on Ster Kinekor representative here.

There are two very important things to keep in mind:

1) Ster Kinekor does not import consoles from the US. If you want to compare, the correct angle would be to look at UK pricing, because our market is tied to it/Europe. In the UK, we're looking at a a launch price of £349 -> R5,617 at today's exchange rate. Add 14% VAT and we have a total cost of R6,403 per PlayStation 4 being sold in South Africa. SK has undercut this by R100, so I don't think we have room to complain here.

2) Consoles are cheaper in the US than they are in Europe and the UK. Most consumer electronics are, and this is simply due to population and business scalability. Anyone who complains about this simply does not understand basic economics. Price is dictated by demand, which is linked to the size and spending power of your market.

All things considered, I think the price is spot-on. It's inline with UK pricing, and cheaper than a Samsung Galaxy S4. Sure, it's a lot of cash for most people living in SA, but SA is a developing economy, and that is simply one of the prices we pay for living here.

Was waiting to see how long it would take for the Justification Pack to come galloping in with breakdowns :rolleyes:

It's fun to stop the neg boulder when it comes to prices, now to do inflation calcs

nevermind, the PS3 had a $600 launch price, this is already cheaper. The xbox 360 was $400 at 2005 so in todays prices its $476.

Lol, how dare I have an opinion that the R6000 plus price tag is too steep and we're getting ripped a new one here in SA ........

bite me :rolleyes:

R6300 for a console! Holy shit! That's.... f*ck me, that's expensive -- not surprising however.
