Bioshock Infinite and it's incredible Paradigms. Have other games lost their originality?

Over the many years that I have been gaming.

I've noticed a steady decline in the originality of games.
It seems that all modern games are made of similar gaming engines. Story lines are so similar, the objectives, motives, and focus points are all the same.

When I started playing games back in my early years, Playstation hit the market, Nintendo, Dreamcast, SNES, Sega.
All were made on different platforms, and had their own unique appeal to them from the ground up.
The story lines were unique too. Every aspect of every game was different to the others. In the quest for better and better graphics, and easy functional game play. It seems games have lost there uniqueness. The story lines are the cherry on the cake. Final Fantasy VIII when I played it the first time was absolutely incredible. It was just pure imagination. In comparison, the new Final Fantasies are just a joke.

The only game I have really enjoyed to play was Bioshock Infinite. It was incredible, and incredibly story line based.
The parallels with real life, the paradigms, the view into human nature and the eventualities of decisions was just awesome. The realism engrossing and captivating.

What has happened to modern gaming?

I think it is all due to the cost of game development skyrocketing as each generation passed. Games cost far less to make on PS1 etc, so it wasn't such a huge risk to try and do something different - leading to a lot of unique titles. Now, the market is dominated my FPS's which are all fairly similar. Even some of the third person shooters try and mimic the gameplay of a FPS. Developers are afraid to take risks, because a game failing could mean you're out a job, so they borrow elements from all the successful titles and throw it into their games, which has resulted in a gaming market with very few unique titles unfortunately.

Hmmm, I think instead of focusing on success and money, they need to focus on their passions and build something incredible from the ground up. What all these companies forget is that just being creative and taking a step in their own direction it leads to something unique and incredible. People are attracted to these things and buy into it. How will the industry be changed? Is this why Indie Games are becoming increasingly popular?

Yeah it is. Indie games are where diversity is at. I'm sure a lot of developers would love to follow their passions and have ideas they think may be great, but I think the publishers probably pressure them to include a lot of the elements of successful titles today instead of taking that risk with something new.
