And the worst of it is, I fear the day my GF or I get horribly sick and cannot afford medical treatment. Or when she gets pregnant. By accident.

Yeah, I have to keep this in mind too. I have medical aid (just barely), but she doesn't. We need to make a plan about this soon.

Ya guys, you should at least have a hospital plan, going to the doc or the dentist every now and then you can handle, but imagine if you get in a car accident and need surgery and have to stay in ICU, there's no way you can cover that.

Yeah, that is a growing concern for us. But we haven't been able to do it in the last couple of months. Hopefully now with her new venture, she'll be able to get something going on the medical aid front.

THats a crazy amount  but in general try shopping around its crazy how much cheaper some hospitals are compared to others and doctors

I have medical insurance just for this

My company makes it compulsory to have medical aid, and a whole bunch of other stuff which withers my net pay to less than 2/3rds. Think I'm paying around R1800 for my wife and I.

Same with my company, but I have to get it at my expense until I become 'permanent' (or until they decide to me make me). At which point they will be paying for it. Or a portion of it.

Our company also requires that we al have medical aid. I've downgraded my package as I am only covering myself only, and I've not been to the doctor in about 2 years. What is a thing that I look at when selecting a medical aid, is their coverage of glasses and optometrists.

Yeah, I'm virtually on the bare minimum hospital plan. Just in case, plus I pay an insignificant amount for gap cover, which I say is totally worth it.

Phew... another hot day!

34 right now according to the car in strand, in hermanus it was around 25 this morning before I left for home

The problem is that basic hospital cover doesn't cover my glasses at all on Discovery. I even looked at the Key Care Plus plans, but they also do not have glasses, and I can't go without that cover. My last pair cost something like R5000, which the medical aid covered luckily.

Jeez that's expensive. I had two pairs made at Torga Optical that cost me R1699. Then I claimed that back. Cheapos, but they work and I don't need anything more than them.

All I can say is...Make sure you have Medical Aid...
If I didn't have Medical aid last year I would have been in debt up to my ears, I don't think people realize how costly a hospital stay can be. The 76 days I spent in hospital last year cost my medical aid over R300 000, that's just for staying...That didn't include any of the tests that were done, blood tests alone were over R30 000, 1 particular scan I went for cost R60 000, then there were the countless X rays and Mri's and tons of other tests.

Yip, I'm blind as a bat. I got mine from SpecSavers about 2 years ago. They had a special that if you got a frame, you get an extra frame with tinted prescription glasses free, which I did, and I had my first real working pair of sunglasses. Unfortunately they went to OppiKoppi, and subsequently also stayed there...

Yep that is why currently I have the cheapest hospital plan that I could find. But as soon as I can afford it, I will upgrade it once I can afford to get a better cover, but i need one for dentistry and optometrists. But its just to expensive for me to pay R2k out of my salary for that.
